Zulk<br />
The pronoun zulk ‘such’ is used for uncountable het-words in the singular.<br />
Used with an adjective, it makes the meaning of that adjective strong<strong>er</strong>.<br />
Used with a noun, it has a more classifying meaning, it talks about things<br />
of a particular kind.<br />
Ik vind dit zulk sm<strong>er</strong>ig wat<strong>er</strong>! I find this wat<strong>er</strong> so disgusting!<br />
Bo<strong>er</strong> Jansen heeft zulk mooi vee! Farm<strong>er</strong> Jansen has such beautiful<br />
cattle!<br />
Ik wil een tafel van zulk hout. I want a table of that kind of wood.<br />
Zulke<br />
The pronoun zulke ‘such’ is used with uncountable de-words in the singular<br />
(the first two examples below) and with all plurals. Accordingly, the<br />
plural of zo’n is zulke. Its meaning is the same as in zo’n and zulk; when<br />
used with an adjective, it makes the meaning of that adjective strong<strong>er</strong>,<br />
and with a noun it classifies that noun.<br />
Dit is zulke lekk<strong>er</strong>e bot<strong>er</strong>! This is such yummy butt<strong>er</strong>!<br />
Kun jij met zulke wol breien? Can you knit with this kind of wool?<br />
Hij heeft zulke aardige oud<strong>er</strong>s! He has such nice parents.<br />
Loop jij op zulke hoge hakken?! Do you walk in such high heels?!<br />
Zulke dingen eet ik niet. I don’t eat such things.<br />
Comparison<br />
In combination with net, the pronouns zo’n, zulk and zulke can be used<br />
to compare two things that are similar. In combination with the negation<br />
niet, they are used to express that something is diff<strong>er</strong>ent. Examples:<br />
Ik vind dit net zo’n goed boek als dat and<strong>er</strong>e van Mulisch.<br />
I think this book is just as good as that oth<strong>er</strong> one by Mulisch.<br />
De Belgen maken net zulk lekk<strong>er</strong> bi<strong>er</strong> als de Ned<strong>er</strong>land<strong>er</strong>s.<br />
The Belgians make just as good a be<strong>er</strong> as the Dutch.<br />
