Zulk
The pronoun zulk ‘such’ is used for uncountable het-words in the singular.
Used with an adjective, it makes the meaning of that adjective stronger.
Used with a noun, it has a more classifying meaning, it talks about things
of a particular kind.
Ik vind dit zulk smerig water! I find this water so disgusting!
Boer Jansen heeft zulk mooi vee! Farmer Jansen has such beautiful
cattle!
Ik wil een tafel van zulk hout. I want a table of that kind of wood.
Zulke
The pronoun zulke ‘such’ is used with uncountable de-words in the singular
(the first two examples below) and with all plurals. Accordingly, the
plural of zo’n is zulke. Its meaning is the same as in zo’n and zulk; when
used with an adjective, it makes the meaning of that adjective stronger,
and with a noun it classifies that noun.
Dit is zulke lekkere boter! This is such yummy butter!
Kun jij met zulke wol breien? Can you knit with this kind of wool?
Hij heeft zulke aardige ouders! He has such nice parents.
Loop jij op zulke hoge hakken?! Do you walk in such high heels?!
Zulke dingen eet ik niet. I don’t eat such things.
Comparison
In combination with net, the pronouns zo’n, zulk and zulke can be used
to compare two things that are similar. In combination with the negation
niet, they are used to express that something is different. Examples:
Ik vind dit net zo’n goed boek als dat andere van Mulisch.
I think this book is just as good as that other one by Mulisch.
De Belgen maken net zulk lekker bier als de Nederlanders.
The Belgians make just as good a beer as the Dutch.
Groenteboer Kuiper verkoopt net zulke goeie sinasappels als groenteboer
Boomsma.
The oranges that greengrocer Kuiper sells are just as good as Boomsma’s.
Ik heb niet zo’n dure auto als jij.
My car isn’t as expensive as yours.
