In contrast situations, the position of niet diff<strong>er</strong>s from the gen<strong>er</strong>al rule. In<br />
the sentence Erik komt niet op maandag, maar op woensdag, niet precedes<br />
the time expression to emphasize the contrast with op woensdag.<br />
Similarly, in the sentence Erik is niet hi<strong>er</strong>, maar daar, niet precedes the<br />
word hi<strong>er</strong> to emphasize the contrast with daar.<br />
The position of niet in sentences with auxiliary v<strong>er</strong>bs<br />
In sentences with auxiliary v<strong>er</strong>bs, niet is usually placed at the end of the<br />
sentence right before the infinitive of the main v<strong>er</strong>b. Howev<strong>er</strong>, all oth<strong>er</strong><br />
rules about the position of niet as explained above apply. Examples:<br />
Erik kan niet komen. Erik cannot come.<br />
Erik kan vanavond niet komen. Erik cannot come tonight.<br />

A special case niet hoeven te<br />
The v<strong>er</strong>b niet hoeven te is the negation of the auxiliary v<strong>er</strong>b moeten. The<br />
negative answ<strong>er</strong> to a question with moeten is always formed with niet hoeven<br />
te. The position of niet is right before te, except when the v<strong>er</strong>b is a separable<br />
v<strong>er</strong>b. In that case it precedes the separable prefix. Examples:<br />
Pet<strong>er</strong>: Moet ik de afwas doen? Do I have to do the dishes?<br />
