In complex passive structures with more than one modal verb, the passive
participle can be at the beginning or at the end of the verb group.
In de krant staat dat er een nieuw gemeentehuis gebouwd zal moeten
worden/zal moeten worden gebouwd.
It says in the paper that a new city hall will have to be built.
Hij zegt dat hij vanmiddag liever niet gestoord zou willen worden/zou
willen worden gestoord.
He says that he’d rather not be disturbed this afternoon.
De voorzitter zei dat de motie niet aangenomen zou kunnen worden/zou
kunnen worden aangenomen.
The chairman said that the motion could not possibly be accepted.
Usage
The passive construction is very common in Dutch, much more so than in
English where it is often dismissed as bad use of grammar. In Dutch, it is
often used in formal language such as in newspaper articles or other news
reports. Especially when the agent of an action is not important or not
(yet) known, we prefer to use the passive voice. The following exercises
should help you develop a better understanding of the usage of this rather
difficult structure.
Exercise 20.1
When we talk about what is typically done in certain places in a general
meaning, we like to use the passive voice. For example:
Wat wordt er in een bakkerij gedaan?
Er wordt brood gebakken en verkocht.
1 Wat wordt er in een schoenenwinkel gedaan? (schoenen verkopen)
2 Wat wordt er in een laboratorium gedaan? (onderzoek doen)
3 Wat wordt er in een drukkerij gedaan? (kranten drukken)
4 Wat wordt er in een bibliotheek gedaan? (boeken lenen)
5 Wat wordt er in het Stedelijk Museum gedaan? (schilderijen bekijken)
