Pronominal adv<strong>er</strong>bs<br />
Introduction<br />
Pronominal adv<strong>er</strong>bs are used to ref<strong>er</strong> to things when the v<strong>er</strong>b or the object<br />
in the sentence take a preposition. The question “Do you ev<strong>er</strong> think about<br />
the future?” could be answ<strong>er</strong>ed: “Yes, I think about it a lot”, or “No, that<br />
I nev<strong>er</strong> think about”. When we use a preposition in English with unemphasized<br />
‘it’ or emphasized ‘this’ or ‘that’, in Dutch we use a pronominal<br />
adv<strong>er</strong>b beginning with <strong>er</strong>, daar or hi<strong>er</strong>.<br />
Some examples<br />
Denk je aan je medicijnen? Ja, ik zal <strong>er</strong>aan denken.<br />
Rememb<strong>er</strong> your medication. Yes, I’ll rememb<strong>er</strong> it.<br />
Heb je ov<strong>er</strong> dat ongeluk gelezen? Ja, ik heb <strong>er</strong>ov<strong>er</strong> gelezen.<br />
Did you read about that accident? Yes, I read about it.<br />
Wilt u een stuk van deze kaas? Ja, ik wil hi<strong>er</strong> wel een stuk van.<br />
Would you like a piece of this cheese? Yes, I’d like a piece of this.<br />
Kijk je wel eens naar “Jeopardy”? Nee zeg, daar kijk ik niet naar.<br />
Do you ev<strong>er</strong> watch Jeopardy? Geez no, that I nev<strong>er</strong> watch.<br />
Pronominal adv<strong>er</strong>bs in questions<br />
When used in questions, the combination wat + preposition is changed into<br />
waar + preposition. Examples:<br />
Waarov<strong>er</strong> praten jullie? What are you talking about?<br />
We praten ov<strong>er</strong> politiek. We are talking about politics.<br />
Waartegen protest<strong>er</strong>en die mensen? What are those people<br />
protesting against?<br />
Ze protest<strong>er</strong>en tegen k<strong>er</strong>nen<strong>er</strong>gie. They are protesting against<br />
nuclear pow<strong>er</strong>. 77
