Leggen and liggen
The verb leggen is used when one places an object in a horizontal, reclining
position. And when the object is in that position, we use liggen.
Examples:
Ik leg de lakens op het bed. I put the sheets on the bed.
Jullie moeten nu je pen neerleggen. You have to put your pens
down now.
Ze gaan hier een nieuwe weg leggen. They’re going to lay a road
here.
Er liggen schone lakens op het bed. There are clean sheets on
the bed.
Liggen de pennen allemaal op tafel? Are all of the pens lying on
the table?
Hoe lang ligt die nieuwe weg er nu al? How long has that new road
been there now?
As with zetten, you will often see the verb leggen in combination with the
separable prefix neer, ‘down’. Example:
Erik: Waar heb je die rapporten neergelegd ?
Where did you put those reports?
Leraar: Leggen jullie je pennen nu maar neer.
Please put down your pens now.
Hangen and hangen
The verb hangen is used for both action and result. Examples:
Ik hang deze foto boven m’n buro. I’ll hang this picture above my desk.
Die foto hangt boven m’n buro. The photo hangs above my desk.
You will often see the verb hangen with the separable prefix op.
Examples:
Zullen we het schilderij hier Shall we hang the painting here?
ophangen?
Die man heeft zich opgehangen. That man hanged himself.
