Conditional sentences in the past perfect with
modal verbs
If the conditional sentence has a modal or auxiliary verb, you can use the
past perfect of the modal verb, which involves two infinitives, or you can
use zou and three infinitives: hebben (or zijn), the past perfect helping verb,
the auxiliary verb, and the main verb. Examples:
a Als ik toen genoeg geld had gehad, dan had ik dat huis kunnen kopen.
If I had had enough money then, I would have been able to buy that
house.
b Als ik toen genoeg geld had gehad, dan zou ik dat huis hebben
kunnen kopen.
Note: In speech, the form in sentence a is the most common.
Conditional sentences expressing a formal request
When we ask someone a favor, we might use a form of the imperative,
Geef me even die krant ‘Give me that paper please’, or a question beginning
with a modal verb such as Kun je me die krant even geven? ‘Can
you give me that paper, please?’ A form of the conditional is used to ask
a question or a favor very formally and politely. Examples:
Zou je me even met die dozen kunnen helpen?
Could you help me with those boxes?
Zou u dit formulier even willen invullen?
Would you be willing to fill in this form?
Zou ik je auto morgen mogen gebruiken?
Would you let me use your car tomorrow?
Zou je hier even willen blijven wachten?
Would you please wait here for a minute?
