Word ord<strong>er</strong><br />

Introduction<br />

In Unit 23 in Basic Dutch, we discussed basic word ord<strong>er</strong> and sentence<br />

structure in coordinated and subordinated sentences. Throughout oth<strong>er</strong><br />

chapt<strong>er</strong>s in this book, on negation, separable v<strong>er</strong>bs, passive structures,<br />

the conditional, and so on, word ord<strong>er</strong> has been at the cent<strong>er</strong> of attention.<br />

This unit provides a summary of the most important aspects of word ord<strong>er</strong><br />

and sentence structure. First, a review of the basics.<br />

Coordinated and subordinated sentences<br />

In a coordinated or main sentence, the v<strong>er</strong>b always takes the second position<br />

(example 1), unless the sentence is a ‘yes–no’ question or an ord<strong>er</strong><br />

using the imp<strong>er</strong>ative. In those two cases, the v<strong>er</strong>b takes the first position<br />

(examples 2, 3). In a subordinated sentence, the v<strong>er</strong>b moves to the end<br />

(example 4). In the examples the v<strong>er</strong>b is in italics.<br />

1 Pet<strong>er</strong> komt naar het feest. Pet<strong>er</strong> is coming to the party.<br />

2 Komt Pet<strong>er</strong> naar het feest? Is Pet<strong>er</strong> coming to the party?<br />

3 Kom ook naar het feest! Do come to the party, too!<br />

4 Pet<strong>er</strong> zegt dat hij naar het Pet<strong>er</strong> says he is coming to the party.<br />

Basic word ord<strong>er</strong> in main sentences<br />

In a main sentence, the subject and v<strong>er</strong>b take first and second place<br />

(example 1), unless th<strong>er</strong>e is inv<strong>er</strong>sion of subject and v<strong>er</strong>b (example 2), and<br />

within the oth<strong>er</strong> elements of the sentence, the ord<strong>er</strong> is as follows: time,<br />

mann<strong>er</strong>, place (example 3).<br />
