Felix: Hé Erik, heb ik jou gisteren in Amsterdam gezien?
Hey Erik, did I see you in Amsterdam yesterday?
No, you can’t have seen me there, because I was in Utrecht.
dubbelganger.
Oh, well, I really thought I saw you walking there. You must
have a double.
Yes, whatever. Say, how many copies of this report does Van
Buren need?
Felix: Je moet hem er vier geven.
You need to give him four.
Erik: Okee.
Okay. Will you remind Janine of that meeting this afternoon?
Felix: Jo, ik zal haar eraan herinneren.
Yep, I will remind her.
Note: Er often introduces a subordinated sentence, especially in combinations
with verbs such as denken aan, rekenen op, dromen van, or in
indirect speech and in passive constructions such as er wordt gezegd, er
staat in de krant, etc. Examples:
Are you aware that you have to go to the dentist tomorrow?
Yes, but I don’t reckon he’s going to have to drill.
Hey, it says in the paper that Van der Werff is going to close.
Sanne: Ach, onzin.
Rubbish. Yesterday they said they need new staff.
Lastly, while er can have many functions in a sentence, it never shows up
more than twice in one sentence. So to answer the question Hoeveel appels
And that is more than
enough.
Exercise 10.1
Review exercise. In the text, determine which function er has, and put either
‘P’ (place) or ‘N’ (number) between the brackets.
