Note: The form wie z’n is much more common because it can be used independently from gender, while wie d’r in the singular always refers to someone or something female. The possessive van in combination with die or dat Another common form of the possessive, often used to contrast with the stressed form of the possessive pronoun, is the preposition van in combination with the demonstrative pronoun die or dat and the object form of the personal pronoun. Examples: Nemen we jouw auto of die van mij? Shall we take your car or mine? Is jullie huis of dat van ons groter? Is your house bigger or is ours? Neem ik mijn gympen of die van jou? Do I take my own sneakers or yours? This construction is also possible with other forms of the possessive as described above: Nemen we oma’s recept of dat van jou? Do we take grandma’s recipe or yours? Ga ik met Erik z’n fiets of die van mij? Do I go with Erik’s bike or mine? Is dit jouw sportbroek of die van Erik? Are these your sports pants or Erik’s? The possessive van in combination with die or dat 41
5 Possessives 42 The possessive with de or het + possessive pronoun + -e Lastly, there is an independent form of the possessive in which the article relative to the noun is combined with the stressed form of the possessive pronoun (except jullie) to which an -e is added. Examples: Neem ik m’n eigen fiets of de jouwe? Do I take my own bike or yours? Gebruiken we oma’s recept of het mijne? Do we use grandma’s recipe or mine? Erik: Die tuin van Schuurman is echt veel mooier dan de onze. Schuurman’s garden is really much more beautiful than ours. Sanne: Ja, maar ons grondstuk heeft meer schaduw dan het hunne. Yes, but our property is shadier than theirs. While grammatically certainly correct, this form is less common than combinations with the preposition van, such as dat/die van mij/jou, etc., especially for the personal pronoun plural. In speech, we would probably rather say dat/die van hun than het/de hunne.
