V<strong>er</strong>b tenses<br />

Introduction<br />

In Units 1, 18, and 19 of Basic Dutch, we discussed v<strong>er</strong>bs in the present<br />

tense, in the present p<strong>er</strong>fect, and in the simple past (or imp<strong>er</strong>fect) tense.<br />

This unit includes the past p<strong>er</strong>fect, and it discusses the various ways in<br />

which the past tenses are used.<br />

V<strong>er</strong>b forms in the present tense<br />

For all tenses, we use a weak and a strong v<strong>er</strong>b as examples: w<strong>er</strong>ken and<br />

rijden. In the table below, the left column lists the p<strong>er</strong>sonal pronouns in<br />

the singular and the plural. Since th<strong>er</strong>e is only one plural form, we use only<br />

one row for the plural. For an ov<strong>er</strong>view in more detail, check Units 1, 18<br />

and 19 in Basic Dutch.<br />

P<strong>er</strong>sonal pronouns w<strong>er</strong>ken rijden<br />

ik w<strong>er</strong>k rijd<br />

jij/je, u w<strong>er</strong>kt (w<strong>er</strong>k je?) rijdt (rijd je?)<br />

hij, zij/ze, het w<strong>er</strong>kt rijdt<br />

wij/we, jullie, zij/ze w<strong>er</strong>ken rijden<br />

V<strong>er</strong>b forms in the simple past (imp<strong>er</strong>fect) tense<br />

For both weak and strong v<strong>er</strong>bs in the simple past tense, th<strong>er</strong>e is one form<br />

for the singular and one for the plural. Typically, in strong v<strong>er</strong>bs the stem<br />

vowel changes. The simple past ending for weak v<strong>er</strong>bs is always -te or<br />

-de in the singular and -ten or -den in the plural. If the stem of the v<strong>er</strong>b<br />

ends in p, t, k, f, s, and ch, the simple past form of the v<strong>er</strong>b ends in -te or<br />

-ten. All oth<strong>er</strong> weak v<strong>er</strong>bs form their simple past tense with the ending<br />
