The Southern Gauteng (Wits) Regional Rail Plan follow ed the National Passenger Rail Transport Plan (Phase 1), w hich proposed an emphasis on those rail transport corridors where all role players were convinced that this w as the best mode of transport for a particular corridor. The service levels on these corridors will be substantially increased. For the other rail corridors, the status quo w ould be maintained. Note: The rail corridors referred to in the Southern Gauteng Rail Plan that are applicable to SDM are: • Vereeniging to Kw aggastroom; and • Vereeniging to Elsburg. The Vereeniging to Kw aggastroom corridor terminates before it riches the boundary between Sedibeng and Johannesburg at the Residentia Station. The Vereeniging to Elsburg corridor extents beyond the boundary between Sedibeng and Ekhurhuleni. The station closest to such boundary is Klipriver Station. TABLE 8.1 contains the results of an assessment and categorisation of existing rail corridors in Gauteng according to the so-called “Netw orks Approach”. The follow ing definitions are used: • Category A: Clear case for rail. High service levels, w ith high frequencies & good facilities. Rail is clearly more appropriate & cost effective than other modes. • Category B: Rail still justified and has service levels with Moderate frequencies. • Category C: Case for rail uncertain. • Category D: No case for rail.
