) The exploration program shall generally:<br />

(i) Verify the existence <strong>and</strong> extent of inaccessible spaces.<br />

(ii) Provide soil bearing capacities <strong>for</strong> Buildings Department filings, where required.<br />

(iii) Locate vault envelopes relative to the survey baselines(s) <strong>and</strong> elevation datum.<br />

c) The Consultant may be required to include one or more of the following items in the program <strong>for</strong> indepth<br />

vault exploration:<br />

(i) Metal Detection;<br />

(ii) Sidewalk Test Pits (Vaults) - 2' x 3' x 3' deep.<br />

(iii) 1/2" diameter Drilled Pilot Holes <strong>for</strong> Vaults, variable depth.<br />

(iv) Soil Bearing Capacity Tests Inside Vaults (<strong>for</strong> foundation <strong>design</strong>).<br />

(v) Interior Vault Closure Wall Removal - miscellaneous materials (non-structural).<br />

d) The Consultant shall submit a proposed exploration program, including the approximate location of<br />

each proposed item of work to the Department <strong>for</strong> review <strong>and</strong> approval.<br />

e) Upon receiving approval, the Consultant shall prepare a location plan <strong>for</strong> all proposed exploration work<br />

<strong>and</strong> also prepare estimates of quantities, specifications <strong>and</strong> descriptions of work in sufficient detail to<br />

fully describe the work.<br />

f) The Consultant shall identify <strong>and</strong> measure all visible structural elements of the vault space, including,<br />

but not limited to, bearing walls (material/thickness), columns (size), footings, beams (size/material),<br />

girders, roof slab material <strong>and</strong> structural system (visual inspection only).<br />

g) The Consultant shall identify, locate <strong>and</strong> measure all <strong>services</strong> <strong>and</strong> utilities within <strong>and</strong> contiguous to the<br />

vault space including, but not limited to, electric service panels (size of panel box, number of circuits,<br />

service ampere ratings, house distribution panel boxes), natural gas service (entry, meter, shutoff),<br />

water service (entry, meter, shutoff, electric ground, pipe size), house trap location, house trap vent<br />

location <strong>and</strong> size, ventilation system, air conditioning system, heating system elements, telephone<br />

lines, sprinkler systems, alarm systems, lighting systems.<br />

h) The Consultant shall provide a Certified Asbestos Investigator (CAI) to per<strong>for</strong>m inspections <strong>and</strong> make<br />

an assessment of the possibility that asbestos installation(s) exist within the vault(s). All such<br />

installations identified shall be photographed <strong>and</strong> measured, <strong>and</strong> the results incorporated into a<br />

Preliminary Asbestos Inspection Report that shall be prepared by the CAI. The report shall identify<br />

<strong>and</strong> describe the location(s) <strong>and</strong> extent of possible asbestos installation(s). The photographs <strong>and</strong><br />

measurements taken shall be included in a technical supplement to the Preliminary Asbestos<br />

Inspection Report.<br />

Sampling <strong>and</strong> testing <strong>for</strong> asbestos, shall be per<strong>for</strong>med, if needed.<br />

i) The exploration program shall also include sampling <strong>and</strong> testing <strong>for</strong> asbestos by a Certified Asbestos<br />

Investigator (CAI) in vaults. The Consultant shall provide a CAI <strong>for</strong> asbestos identification, sampling<br />

<strong>and</strong> testing; <strong>and</strong> <strong>for</strong> preparing/filing Buildings Department <strong>and</strong> New York City Department of<br />

Environmental Protection asbestos <strong>for</strong>ms.<br />
