acute radiation syndrome — An acute illness caused by irradiation <strong>of</strong> the body by a high<br />

dose <strong>of</strong> penetrating radiation in a very short period <strong>of</strong> time. Also called ARS. (JP 3-11)<br />

Adaptive Planning and Execution system — A Department <strong>of</strong> Defense system <strong>of</strong> joint<br />

policies, processes, procedures, and reporting structures, supported by <strong>com</strong>munications<br />

and information technology, that is used by the joint planning and execution<br />

<strong>com</strong>munity to monitor, plan, and execute mobilization, deployment, employment,<br />

sustainment, redeployment, and demobilization activities associated with joint<br />

operations. Also called APEX system. (JP 5-0)<br />

adequacy — The joint operation plan review criterion for assessing whether the scope and<br />

concept <strong>of</strong> planned operations can ac<strong>com</strong>plish the assigned mission and <strong>com</strong>ply with<br />

the planning guidance provided. See also acceptability; feasibility. (JP 5-0)<br />

adjust — An order to the observer or spotter to initiate an adjustment on a designated target.<br />

administrative contracting <strong>of</strong>ficer — Contracting <strong>of</strong>ficer whose primary duties involve<br />

contract administration. Also called ACO. See also contracting <strong>of</strong>ficer; procuring<br />

contracting <strong>of</strong>ficer. (JP 4-10)<br />

administrative control — Direction or exercise <strong>of</strong> authority over subordinate or other<br />

organizations in respect to administration and support, including organization <strong>of</strong><br />

Service forces, control <strong>of</strong> resources and equipment, personnel management, unit<br />

logistics, individual and unit training, readiness, mobilization, demobilization,<br />

discipline, and other matters not included in the operational missions <strong>of</strong> the subordinate<br />

or other organizations. Also called ADCON. (JP 1)<br />

administrative landing — An unopposed landing involving debarkation from vessels that<br />

have been administratively loaded. See also administrative loading; logistics overthe-shore<br />

operations.<br />

administrative loading — A loading method that gives primary consideration to achieving<br />

maximum utilization <strong>of</strong> troop and cargo space without regard to tactical considerations.<br />

Equipment and supplies must be unloaded and sorted before they can be used. Also<br />

called <strong>com</strong>mercial loading. (JP 3-<strong>02</strong>.1)<br />

advanced base — A base located in or near an operational area whose primary mission is to<br />

support military operations. (JP 3-34)<br />

advanced geospatial intelligence — Refers to the technical, geospatial, and intelligence<br />

information derived through interpretation or analysis using advanced processing <strong>of</strong> all<br />

data collected by imagery or imagery-related collection systems. Also known as<br />

imagery-derived measurement and signature intelligence. Also called AGI. (JP 2-03)<br />
