trafficability — Capability <strong>of</strong> terrain to bear traffic. It refers to the extent to which the<br />

terrain will permit continued movement <strong>of</strong> any or all types <strong>of</strong> traffic.<br />

traffic density — (*) The average number <strong>of</strong> vehicles that occupy one mile or one<br />

kilometer <strong>of</strong> road space, expressed in vehicles per mile or per kilometer.<br />

traffic flow security — The protection resulting from features, inherent in some<br />

cryptoequipment, that conceal the presence <strong>of</strong> valid messages on a <strong>com</strong>munications<br />

circuit, normally achieved by causing the circuit to appear busy at all times.<br />

traffic management — The direction, control, and supervision <strong>of</strong> all functions incident to<br />

the procurement and use <strong>of</strong> freight and passenger transportation services. (JP 4-09)<br />

traffic pattern — The traffic flow that is prescribed for aircraft landing at, taxiing on, and<br />

taking <strong>of</strong>f from an airport. The usual <strong>com</strong>ponents <strong>of</strong> a traffic pattern are upwind leg,<br />

crosswind leg, downwind leg, base leg, and final approach.<br />

training aids — Any item developed or procured with the primary intent that it shall assist<br />

in training and the process <strong>of</strong> learning.<br />

training and readiness oversight — The authority that <strong>com</strong>batant <strong>com</strong>manders may<br />

exercise over assigned Reserve Component forces when not on active duty or when on<br />

active duty for training. As a matter <strong>of</strong> Department <strong>of</strong> Defense policy, this authority<br />

includes: a. Providing guidance to Service <strong>com</strong>ponent <strong>com</strong>manders on operational<br />

requirements and priorities to be addressed in <strong>Military</strong> Department training and<br />

readiness programs; b. Commenting on Service <strong>com</strong>ponent program re<strong>com</strong>mendations<br />

and budget requests; c. Coordinating and approving participation by assigned Reserve<br />

Component forces in joint exercises and other joint training when on active duty for<br />

training or performing inactive duty for training; d. Obtaining and reviewing readiness<br />

and inspection reports on assigned Reserve Component forces; and e. Coordinating and<br />

reviewing mobilization plans (including post-mobilization training activities and<br />

deployability validation procedures) developed for assigned Reserve Component<br />

training period — An authorized and scheduled regular inactive duty training period. A<br />

training period must be at least two hours for retirement point credit and four hours for<br />

pay. Previously used interchangeably with other <strong>com</strong>mon terms such as drills, drill<br />

period, assemblies, periods <strong>of</strong> instruction, etc.<br />

training pipeline — A Reserve Component category designation that identifies untrained<br />

<strong>of</strong>ficer and enlisted personnel who have not <strong>com</strong>pleted initial active duty for training <strong>of</strong><br />

12 weeks or its equivalent.<br />

training unit — A unit established to provide military training to individual reservists or to<br />

Reserve Component units. (JP 4-05)<br />
