route classification — Classification assigned to a route using factors <strong>of</strong> minimum width,<br />

worst route type, least bridge, raft, or culvert military load classification, and<br />

obstructions to traffic flow. (JP 3-34)<br />

rules for the use <strong>of</strong> force — Directives issued to guide United States forces on the use <strong>of</strong><br />

force during various operations. These directives may take the form <strong>of</strong> execute orders,<br />

deployment orders, memoranda <strong>of</strong> agreement, or plans. Also called RUF. (JP 3-28)<br />

rules <strong>of</strong> engagement — Directives issued by <strong>com</strong>petent military authority that delineate the<br />

circumstances and limitations under which United States forces will initiate and/or<br />

continue <strong>com</strong>bat engagement with other forces encountered. Also called ROE. See<br />

ruse — In military deception, a trick <strong>of</strong> war designed to deceive the adversary, usually<br />

involving the deliberate exposure <strong>of</strong> false information to the adversary’s intelligence<br />
