classified information — Official information that has been determined to require, in the<br />

interests <strong>of</strong> national security, protection against unauthorized disclosure and which has<br />

been so designated. (JP 2-01.2)<br />

cleansing station — See decontamination station.<br />

clearance capacity — An estimate expressed in terms <strong>of</strong> measurement or weight tons per<br />

day <strong>of</strong> the cargo that may be transported inland from a beach or port over the available<br />

means <strong>of</strong> inland <strong>com</strong>munication, including roads, railroads, and inland waterways. The<br />

estimate is based on an evaluation <strong>of</strong> the physical characteristics <strong>of</strong> the transportation<br />

facilities in the area. See also port capacity.<br />

clearance decontamination — The final level <strong>of</strong> decontamination that provides the<br />

decontamination <strong>of</strong> equipment and personnel to a level that allows unrestricted<br />

transportation, maintenance, employment, and disposal. (JP 3-11)<br />

clearing operation — An operation designed to clear or neutralize all mines and obstacles<br />

from a route or area. (JP 3-15)<br />

close air support — Air action by fixed- and rotary-wing aircraft against hostile targets that<br />

are in close proximity to friendly forces and that require detailed integration <strong>of</strong> each air<br />

mission with the fire and movement <strong>of</strong> those forces. Also called CAS. See also air<br />

interdiction; immediate mission request; preplanned mission request. (JP 3-0)<br />

close-controlled air interception — (*) An interception in which the interceptor is<br />

continuously controlled to a position from which the target is within visual range or<br />

radar contact. See also air interception.<br />

close support — That action <strong>of</strong> the supporting force against targets or objectives which are<br />

sufficiently near the supported force as to require detailed integration or coordination <strong>of</strong><br />

the supporting action with the fire, movement, or other actions <strong>of</strong> the supported force.<br />

close support area — Those parts <strong>of</strong> the ocean operating areas nearest to, but not<br />

necessarily in, the objective area. They are assigned to naval support carrier strike<br />

groups, surface action groups, surface action units, and certain logistic <strong>com</strong>bat service<br />

support elements. (JP 3-<strong>02</strong>)<br />

closure — In transportation, the process <strong>of</strong> a unit arriving at a specified location. It begins<br />

when the first element arrives at a designated location, e.g., port <strong>of</strong> entry and/or port <strong>of</strong><br />

departure, intermediate stops, or final destination, and ends when the last element does<br />

likewise. For the purposes <strong>of</strong> studies and <strong>com</strong>mand post exercises, a unit is considered<br />
