intelligence operations — The variety <strong>of</strong> intelligence and counterintelligence tasks that are<br />

carried out by various intelligence organizations and activities within the intelligence<br />

process. Intelligence operations include planning and direction, collection, processing<br />

and exploitation, analysis and production, dissemination and integration, and evaluation<br />

and feedback. See also analysis and production; collection; dissemination and<br />

intelligence preparation <strong>of</strong> the battlespace — The analytical methodologies employed by<br />

the Services or joint force <strong>com</strong>ponent <strong>com</strong>mands to reduce uncertainties concerning the<br />

enemy, environment, time, and terrain. Intelligence preparation <strong>of</strong> the battlespace supports<br />

the individual operations <strong>of</strong> the joint force <strong>com</strong>ponent <strong>com</strong>mands. Also called IPB. See<br />

also joint intelligence preparation <strong>of</strong> the operational environment. (JP 2-01.3)<br />

intelligence process — The process by which information is converted into intelligence and<br />

made available to users. The process consists <strong>of</strong> six interrelated intelligence operations:<br />

planning and direction, collection, processing and exploitation, analysis and production,<br />

dissemination and integration, and evaluation and feedback. See also analysis and<br />

intelligence-related activities — Those activities outside the consolidated defense<br />

intelligence program that: respond to operational <strong>com</strong>manders’ tasking for<br />

time-sensitive information on foreign entities; respond to national intelligence<br />

<strong>com</strong>munity tasking <strong>of</strong> systems whose primary mission is support to operating forces;<br />

train personnel for intelligence duties; provide an intelligence reserve; or are devoted to<br />

research and development <strong>of</strong> intelligence or related capabilities. (Specifically excluded<br />

are programs that are so closely integrated with a weapon system that their primary<br />

function is to provide immediate-use targeting data.) (JP 2-01)<br />

intelligence report — A specific report <strong>of</strong> information, usually on a single item, made at<br />

any level <strong>of</strong> <strong>com</strong>mand in tactical operations and disseminated as rapidly as possible in<br />

keeping with the timeliness <strong>of</strong> the information. Also called INTREP.<br />

intelligence reporting — The preparation and conveyance <strong>of</strong> information by any means.<br />

More <strong>com</strong>monly, the term is restricted to reports as they are prepared by the collector and<br />

as they are transmitted by the collector to the latter’s headquarters and by this <strong>com</strong>ponent<br />

<strong>of</strong> the intelligence structure to one or more intelligence-producing <strong>com</strong>ponents. Thus,<br />

even in this limited sense, reporting embraces both collection and dissemination. The<br />

term is applied to normal and specialist intelligence reports. (JP 2-01.2)<br />

intelligence requirement — 1. Any subject, general or specific, upon which there is a need<br />

for the collection <strong>of</strong> information, or the production <strong>of</strong> intelligence. 2. A requirement<br />

for intelligence to fill a gap in the <strong>com</strong>mand’s knowledge or understanding <strong>of</strong> the<br />

operational environment or threat forces. See also intelligence; priority intelligence<br />
