C-day — The unnamed day on which a deployment operation <strong>com</strong>mences or is to<br />

<strong>com</strong>mence. (JP 5-0)<br />

cease fire line — See armistice demarcation line. See also armistice. (JP 3-07.3)<br />

cell — A subordinate organization formed around a specific process, capability, or activity<br />

within a designated larger organization <strong>of</strong> a joint force <strong>com</strong>mander’s headquarters. A<br />

cell usually is part <strong>of</strong> both a functional and traditional staff structures. (JP 3-33)<br />

center — An enduring functional organization, with a supporting staff, designed to perform<br />

a joint function within a joint force <strong>com</strong>mander’s headquarters. (JP 3-33)<br />

center <strong>of</strong> burst — See mean point <strong>of</strong> impact.<br />

center <strong>of</strong> gravity — The source <strong>of</strong> power that provides moral or physical strength, freedom<br />

<strong>of</strong> action, or will to act. Also called COG. See also decisive point. (JP 5-0)<br />

centigray — A unit <strong>of</strong> absorbed dose <strong>of</strong> radiation (one centigray equals one rad). (JP 3-11)<br />

central control <strong>of</strong>ficer — The <strong>of</strong>ficer designated by the amphibious task force <strong>com</strong>mander<br />

for the overall coordination <strong>of</strong> the waterborne ship-to-shore movement. The central<br />

control <strong>of</strong>ficer is embarked in the central control ship. Also called CCO. (JP 3-<strong>02</strong>)<br />

centralized control — 1. In air defense, the control mode whereby a higher echelon makes<br />

direct target assignments to fire units. 2. In joint air operations, placing within one<br />

<strong>com</strong>mander the responsibility and authority for planning, directing, and coordinating a<br />

military operation or group/category <strong>of</strong> operations. See also decentralized control.<br />

chaff — Radar confusion reflectors, consisting <strong>of</strong> thin, narrow metallic strips <strong>of</strong> various<br />

lengths and frequency responses, which are used to reflect echoes for confusion<br />

purposes. Causes enemy radar guided missiles to lock on to it instead <strong>of</strong> the real<br />

aircraft, ship, or other platform. See also deception.<br />

chain <strong>of</strong> <strong>com</strong>mand — The succession <strong>of</strong> <strong>com</strong>manding <strong>of</strong>ficers from a superior to a<br />

subordinate through which <strong>com</strong>mand is exercised. (JP 3-0)<br />

Chairman <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Joint</strong> Chiefs <strong>of</strong> Staff instruction — A replacement document for all<br />

types <strong>of</strong> correspondence containing Chairman <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Joint</strong> Chiefs <strong>of</strong> Staff policy and<br />

guidance that does not involve the employment <strong>of</strong> forces. An instruction is <strong>of</strong><br />

indefinite duration and is applicable to external agencies, or both the <strong>Joint</strong> Staff and<br />

external agencies. It remains in effect until superseded, rescinded, or otherwise<br />

canceled. Chairman <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Joint</strong> Chiefs <strong>of</strong> Staff instructions, unlike joint publications,<br />

will not contain joint doctrine. Terminology used in these publications will be<br />
