SIGINT direct support unit — A signals intelligence (SIGINT) unit, usually mobile,<br />

designed to perform a SIGINT direct support role for a military <strong>com</strong>mander under<br />

delegated authority from the Director, National Security Agency/Chief, Central<br />

Security Service. See also signals intelligence.<br />

SIGINT operational control — The authoritative direction <strong>of</strong> signals intelligence<br />

(SIGINT) activities, including tasking and allocation <strong>of</strong> effort, and the authoritative<br />

prescription <strong>of</strong> those uniform techniques and standards by which SIGINT information<br />

is collected, processed, and reported. See also signals intelligence.<br />

SIGINT operational tasking — The authoritative operational direction <strong>of</strong> and direct<br />

levying <strong>of</strong> signals intelligence (SIGINT) information needs by a military <strong>com</strong>mander<br />

on designated SIGINT resources. These requirements are directive, irrespective <strong>of</strong><br />

other priorities, and are conditioned only by the capability <strong>of</strong> those resources to produce<br />

such information. Operational tasking includes authority to deploy all or part <strong>of</strong> the<br />

SIGINT resources for which SIGINT operational tasking authority has been delegated.<br />

SIGINT operational tasking authority — A military <strong>com</strong>mander’s authority to<br />

operationally direct and levy signals intelligence (SIGINT) requirements on designated<br />

SIGINT resources; includes authority to deploy and redeploy all or part <strong>of</strong> the SIGINT<br />

resources for which SIGINT operational tasking authority has been delegated. Also<br />

called SOTA. See also signals intelligence.<br />

SIGINT resources — Personnel and equipment <strong>of</strong> any unit, activity, or organizational<br />

element engaged in signals intelligence activities. See also signals intelligence.<br />

signal operating instructions — A series <strong>of</strong> orders issued for technical control and<br />

coordination <strong>of</strong> the signal <strong>com</strong>munication activities <strong>of</strong> a <strong>com</strong>mand. In Marine Corps<br />

usage, these instructions are designated <strong>com</strong>munication operation instructions. (JP 6-0)<br />

signal security — A generic term that includes both <strong>com</strong>munications security and<br />

electronics security. See also security.<br />

signals intelligence — 1. A category <strong>of</strong> intelligence <strong>com</strong>prising either individually or in<br />

<strong>com</strong>bination all <strong>com</strong>munications intelligence, electronic intelligence, and foreign<br />

instrumentation signals intelligence, however transmitted. 2. Intelligence derived from<br />

<strong>com</strong>munications, electronic, and foreign instrumentation signals. Also called SIGINT.<br />

signal-to-noise ratio — The ratio <strong>of</strong> the amplitude <strong>of</strong> the desired signal to the amplitude <strong>of</strong><br />

noise signals at a given point in time.<br />
