<strong>com</strong>mand and control — The exercise <strong>of</strong> authority and direction by a properly designated<br />

<strong>com</strong>mander over assigned and attached forces in the ac<strong>com</strong>plishment <strong>of</strong> the mission.<br />

Command and control functions are performed through an arrangement <strong>of</strong> personnel,<br />

equipment, <strong>com</strong>munications, facilities, and procedures employed by a <strong>com</strong>mander in<br />

planning, directing, coordinating, and controlling forces and operations in the<br />

ac<strong>com</strong>plishment <strong>of</strong> the mission. Also called C2. (JP 1)<br />

<strong>com</strong>mand and control system — The facilities, equipment, <strong>com</strong>munications, procedures,<br />

and personnel essential to a <strong>com</strong>mander for planning, directing, and controlling<br />

operations <strong>of</strong> assigned and attached forces pursuant to the missions assigned. (JP 6-0)<br />

<strong>com</strong>mand assessment element — The small team <strong>of</strong> personnel sent by the United States<br />

Northern Command or United States Pacific Command to a chemical, biological,<br />

radiological, nuclear, or high-yield explosives incident site to conduct a consequence<br />

management assessment and make an evaluation <strong>of</strong> potential shortfalls in federal and<br />

state capabilities, which may be<strong>com</strong>e requests for Department <strong>of</strong> Defense assistance.<br />

Also called CAE. (JP 3-41)<br />

<strong>com</strong>mand center — A facility from which a <strong>com</strong>mander and his or her representatives<br />

direct operations and control forces. It is organized to gather, process, analyze, display,<br />

and disseminate planning and operational data and perform other related tasks. Also<br />

called CC.<br />

<strong>com</strong>mand chaplain — The senior chaplain assigned to or designated by a <strong>com</strong>mander <strong>of</strong> a<br />

staff, <strong>com</strong>mand, or unit. See also <strong>com</strong>batant <strong>com</strong>mand chaplain; religious support;<br />

<strong>com</strong>mand element — The core element <strong>of</strong> a Marine air-ground task force that is the<br />

headquarters. The <strong>com</strong>mand element is <strong>com</strong>posed <strong>of</strong> the <strong>com</strong>mander, general or<br />

executive and special staff sections, headquarters section, and requisite<br />

<strong>com</strong>munications support, intelligence, and reconnaissance forces necessary to<br />

ac<strong>com</strong>plish the mission. The <strong>com</strong>mand element provides <strong>com</strong>mand and control,<br />

intelligence, and other support essential for effective planning and execution <strong>of</strong><br />

operations by the other elements <strong>of</strong> the Marine air-ground task force. The <strong>com</strong>mand<br />

element varies in size and <strong>com</strong>position. Also called CE. (JP 3-<strong>02</strong>)<br />

<strong>com</strong>mander, amphibious task force — The Navy <strong>of</strong>ficer designated in the initiating<br />

directive as the <strong>com</strong>mander <strong>of</strong> the amphibious task force. Also called CATF. See also<br />

<strong>com</strong>mander, landing force — The <strong>of</strong>ficer designated in the initiating directive as the<br />

<strong>com</strong>mander <strong>of</strong> the landing force for an amphibious operation. Also called CLF. See also<br />

<strong>com</strong>mander’s critical information requirement — An information requirement identified<br />

by the <strong>com</strong>mander as being critical to facilitating timely decision making. Also called<br />
