theater <strong>of</strong> operations — An operational area defined by the geographic <strong>com</strong>batant<br />

<strong>com</strong>mander for the conduct or support <strong>of</strong> specific military operations. Also called TO.<br />

theater <strong>of</strong> war — Defined by the President, Secretary <strong>of</strong> Defense, or the geographic<br />

<strong>com</strong>batant <strong>com</strong>mander as the area <strong>of</strong> air, land, and water that is, or may be<strong>com</strong>e,<br />

directly involved in the conduct <strong>of</strong> major operations and campaigns involving <strong>com</strong>bat.<br />

theater patient movement requirements center — The activity responsible for<br />

intratheater patient movement management (medical regulating and aeromedical<br />

evacuation scheduling), the development <strong>of</strong> theater-level patient movement plans and<br />

schedules, the monitoring and execution in concert with the Global Patient Movement<br />

Requirements Center. Also called TPMRC. (JP 4-<strong>02</strong>)<br />

theater special operations <strong>com</strong>mand — A subordinate unified <strong>com</strong>mand established by a<br />

<strong>com</strong>batant <strong>com</strong>mander to plan, coordinate, conduct, and support joint special<br />

operations. Also called TSOC. See also special operations. (JP 3-05)<br />

theater strategy — An overarching construct outlining a <strong>com</strong>batant <strong>com</strong>mander’s vision<br />

for integrating and synchronizing military activities and operations with the other<br />

instruments <strong>of</strong> national power in order to achieve national strategic objectives. See also<br />

theater support contract — A type <strong>of</strong> contingency contract that is awarded by contracting<br />

<strong>of</strong>ficers in the operational area serving under the direct contracting authority <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Service <strong>com</strong>ponent, special operations force <strong>com</strong>mand, or designated joint head <strong>of</strong><br />

contracting activity for the designated contingency operation. See also external<br />

thermal crossover — The natural phenomenon that normally occurs twice daily when<br />

temperature conditions are such that there is a loss <strong>of</strong> contrast between two adjacent<br />

objects on infrared imagery. (JP 3-09.3)<br />

thermal energy — The energy emitted from the fireball as thermal radiation. The total<br />

amount <strong>of</strong> thermal energy received per unit area at a specified distance from a nuclear<br />

explosion is generally expressed in terms <strong>of</strong> calories per square centimeter.<br />

thermal exposure — The total normal <strong>com</strong>ponent <strong>of</strong> thermal radiation striking a given<br />

surface throughout the course <strong>of</strong> a detonation; expressed in calories per square<br />

centimeter or megajoules per square meter.<br />

thermal imagery — (*) Imagery produced by sensing and recording the thermal energy<br />

emitted or reflected from the objects which are imaged.<br />
