coup de main — An <strong>of</strong>fensive operation that capitalizes on surprise and simultaneous<br />

execution <strong>of</strong> supporting operations to achieve success in one swift stroke. (JP 3-0)<br />

courier — A messenger (usually a <strong>com</strong>missioned or warrant <strong>of</strong>ficer) responsible for the<br />

secure physical transmission and delivery <strong>of</strong> documents and material. Generally<br />

referred to as a <strong>com</strong>mand or local courier.<br />

course <strong>of</strong> action — 1. Any sequence <strong>of</strong> activities that an individual or unit may follow. 2.<br />

A scheme developed to ac<strong>com</strong>plish a mission. 3. A product <strong>of</strong> the course-<strong>of</strong>-action<br />

development step <strong>of</strong> the joint operation planning process. Also called COA. (JP 5-0)<br />

cover — In intelligence usage, those measures necessary to give protection to a person,<br />

plan, operation, formation, or installation from the enemy intelligence effort and<br />

leakage <strong>of</strong> information. (JP 2-01.2)<br />

covering fire — 1. Fire used to protect troops when they are within range <strong>of</strong> enemy small<br />

arms. 2. In amphibious usage, fire delivered prior to the landing to cover preparatory<br />

operations such as underwater demolition or mine countermeasures. (JP 3-<strong>02</strong>)<br />

covering force — 1. A force operating apart from the main force for the purpose <strong>of</strong><br />

intercepting, engaging, delaying, disorganizing, and deceiving the enemy before the<br />

enemy can attack the force covered. 2. Any body or detachment <strong>of</strong> troops which<br />

provides security for a larger force by observation, reconnaissance, attack, or defense,<br />

or by any <strong>com</strong>bination <strong>of</strong> these methods. (JP 3-18)<br />

cover (military) — Actions to conceal actual friendly intentions, capabilities, operations,<br />

and other activities by providing a plausible yet erroneous explanation <strong>of</strong> the<br />

observable.<br />

covert operation — An operation that is so planned and executed as to conceal the identity<br />

<strong>of</strong> or permit plausible denial by the sponsor. See also clandestine operation; overt<br />

operation. (JP 3-05)<br />

coxswain — A person in charge <strong>of</strong> a small craft (in the Army, a Class B or smaller craft)<br />

who <strong>of</strong>ten functions as the helmsman. For a causeway ferry, the pilot is in charge with<br />

the coxswain performing helmsman functions. See causeway. (JP 4-01.6)<br />

crash rescue and fire suppression — Extraction <strong>of</strong> aircrew members from crashed or<br />

burning aircraft and the control <strong>of</strong> related fires. (JP 3-34)<br />

crater — The pit, depression, or cavity formed in the surface <strong>of</strong> the Earth by an explosion.<br />

It may range from saucer shaped to conical, depending largely on the depth <strong>of</strong> burst. In<br />
