submarine operating authority — The naval <strong>com</strong>mander exercising operational control <strong>of</strong><br />

submarines. Also called SUBOPAUTH.<br />

submarine patrol area — A restricted area established to allow submarine operations: a.<br />

unimpeded by the operation <strong>of</strong>, or possible attack from, friendly forces in wartime; b.<br />

without submerged mutual interference in peacetime.<br />

subordinate campaign plan — A <strong>com</strong>batant <strong>com</strong>mand prepared plan that satisfies the<br />

requirements under a Department <strong>of</strong> Defense campaign plan, which, depending upon<br />

the circumstances, transitions to a supported or supporting plan in execution. (JP 5-0)<br />

subordinate <strong>com</strong>mand — A <strong>com</strong>mand consisting <strong>of</strong> the <strong>com</strong>mander and all those<br />

individuals, units, detachments, organizations, or installations that have been placed<br />

under the <strong>com</strong>mand by the authority establishing the subordinate <strong>com</strong>mand. (JP 1)<br />

subordinate unified <strong>com</strong>mand — A <strong>com</strong>mand established by <strong>com</strong>manders <strong>of</strong> unified<br />

<strong>com</strong>mands, when so authorized by the Secretary <strong>of</strong> Defense through the Chairman <strong>of</strong><br />

the <strong>Joint</strong> Chiefs <strong>of</strong> Staff, to conduct operations on a continuing basis in accordance with<br />

the criteria set forth for unified <strong>com</strong>mands. A subordinate unified <strong>com</strong>mand may be<br />

established on an area or functional basis. Commanders <strong>of</strong> subordinate unified<br />

<strong>com</strong>mands have functions and responsibilities similar to those <strong>of</strong> the <strong>com</strong>manders <strong>of</strong><br />

unified <strong>com</strong>mands and exercise operational control <strong>of</strong> assigned <strong>com</strong>mands and forces<br />

within the assigned operational area. Also called subunified <strong>com</strong>mand. See also<br />

subscription — An agreement by a nation’s <strong>Military</strong> Services to agree to accept and abide<br />

by, with or without reservation, the details <strong>of</strong> a standardization agreement. See also<br />

implementation; ratification.<br />

subsidiary landing — In an amphibious operation, a landing usually made outside the<br />

designated landing area, the purpose <strong>of</strong> which is to support the main landing. (JP 3-<strong>02</strong>)<br />

subunified <strong>com</strong>mand — See subordinate unified <strong>com</strong>mand. (JP 1)<br />

subversion — Actions designed to undermine the military, economic, psychological, or<br />

political strength or morale <strong>of</strong> a governing authority. See also unconventional<br />

warfare. (JP 3-24)<br />

subversive political action — A planned series <strong>of</strong> activities designed to ac<strong>com</strong>plish<br />

political objectives by influencing, dominating, or displacing individuals or groups who<br />

are so placed as to affect the decisions and actions <strong>of</strong> another government.<br />
