line <strong>of</strong> demarcation — A line defining the boundary <strong>of</strong> a buffer zone or area <strong>of</strong> limitation.<br />

A line <strong>of</strong> demarcation may also be used to define the forward limits <strong>of</strong> disputing or<br />

belligerent forces after each phase <strong>of</strong> disengagement or withdrawal has been<br />

<strong>com</strong>pleted. See also area <strong>of</strong> limitation; buffer zone; disengagement; peace<br />

line <strong>of</strong> departure — 1. In land warfare, a line designated to coordinate the departure <strong>of</strong><br />

attack elements. Also called LD. (JP 3-31) 2. In amphibious warfare, a suitably<br />

marked <strong>of</strong>fshore coordinating line to assist assault craft to land on designated beaches<br />

at scheduled times the seaward end <strong>of</strong> a boat lane. Also called LOD. (JP 3-<strong>02</strong>)<br />

line <strong>of</strong> effort — In the context <strong>of</strong> joint operation planning, using the purpose (cause and<br />

effect) to focus efforts toward establishing operational and strategic conditions by<br />

linking multiple tasks and missions. Also called LOE. (JP 5-0)<br />

line <strong>of</strong> operation — A line that defines the interior or exterior orientation <strong>of</strong> the force in<br />

relation to the enemy or that connects actions on nodes and/or decisive points related in<br />

time and space to an objective(s). Also called LOO. (JP 5-0)<br />

link — 1. A behavioral, physical, or functional relationship between nodes. 2. In<br />

<strong>com</strong>munications, a general term used to indicate the existence <strong>of</strong> <strong>com</strong>munications<br />

facilities between two points. 3. A maritime route, other than a coastal or transit route,<br />

which links any two or more routes. See also node. (JP 3-0)<br />

link encryption — The application <strong>of</strong> online crypto-operation to a link <strong>of</strong> a<br />

<strong>com</strong>munications system so that all information passing over the link is encrypted in its<br />

entirety.<br />

listening watch — A continuous receiver watch established for the reception <strong>of</strong> traffic<br />

addressed to, or <strong>of</strong> interest to, the unit maintaining the watch, with <strong>com</strong>plete log<br />

optional.<br />

litter — A basket or frame utilized for the transport <strong>of</strong> injured persons.<br />

litter patient — A patient requiring litter ac<strong>com</strong>modations while in transit.<br />

littoral — The littoral <strong>com</strong>prises two segments <strong>of</strong> operational environment: 1. Seaward: the<br />

area from the open ocean to the shore, which must be controlled to support operations<br />

ashore. 2. Landward: the area inland from the shore that can be supported and<br />

defended directly from the sea. (JP 2-01.3)<br />

loading plan — All <strong>of</strong> the individually prepared documents which, taken together, present<br />

in detail all instructions for the arrangement <strong>of</strong> personnel, and the loading <strong>of</strong> equipment<br />

for one or more units or other special grouping <strong>of</strong> personnel or material moving by<br />

highway, water, rail, or air transportation. (JP 3-<strong>02</strong>.1)<br />
