<strong>com</strong>bat spread loading — A method <strong>of</strong> <strong>com</strong>bat loading by which some <strong>of</strong> the troops,<br />

equipment, and initial supplies <strong>of</strong> a unit are loaded in one ship and the remainder are<br />

loaded in one or more others. This method is <strong>com</strong>monly used for troop units with<br />

heavy equipment. (JP 3-<strong>02</strong>.1)<br />

<strong>com</strong>bat support — Fire support and operational assistance provided to <strong>com</strong>bat elements.<br />

Also called CS. See also <strong>com</strong>bat service support. (JP 4-0)<br />

<strong>com</strong>bat support agency — A Department <strong>of</strong> Defense agency so designated by Congress or<br />

the Secretary <strong>of</strong> Defense that supports military <strong>com</strong>bat operations. Also called CSA.<br />

<strong>com</strong>bat surveillance — A continuous, all-weather, day-and-night, systematic watch over<br />

the battle area in order to provide timely information for tactical <strong>com</strong>bat operations.<br />

<strong>com</strong>bat survival — (*) Those measures to be taken by Service personnel when<br />

involuntarily separated from friendly forces in <strong>com</strong>bat, including procedures relating to<br />

individual survival, evasion, escape, and conduct after capture.<br />

<strong>com</strong>bat unit loading — A method <strong>of</strong> loading by which all or a part <strong>of</strong> a <strong>com</strong>bat unit, such<br />

as an assault battalion landing team, is <strong>com</strong>pletely loaded in a single ship, with essential<br />

<strong>com</strong>bat equipment and supplies, in such a manner as to be immediately available to<br />

support the tactical plan upon debarkation, and to provide a maximum <strong>of</strong> flexibility to<br />

meet possible changes in the tactical plan. (JP 3-<strong>02</strong>.1)<br />

<strong>com</strong>bined — Between two or more forces or agencies <strong>of</strong> two or more allies. (When all<br />

allies or services are not involved, the participating nations and services shall be<br />

identified, e.g., <strong>com</strong>bined navies.) See also joint.<br />

<strong>com</strong>bined arms team — The full integration and application <strong>of</strong> two or more arms or<br />

elements <strong>of</strong> one <strong>Military</strong> Service into an operation. (JP 3-18)<br />

<strong>com</strong>bined force — A military force <strong>com</strong>posed <strong>of</strong> elements <strong>of</strong> two or more allied nations.<br />

<strong>com</strong>mand — 1. The authority that a <strong>com</strong>mander in the armed forces lawfully exercises<br />

over subordinates by virtue <strong>of</strong> rank or assignment. Command includes the authority<br />

and responsibility for effectively using available resources and for planning the<br />

employment <strong>of</strong>, organizing, directing, coordinating, and controlling military forces for<br />

the ac<strong>com</strong>plishment <strong>of</strong> assigned missions. It also includes responsibility for health,<br />

welfare, morale, and discipline <strong>of</strong> assigned personnel. 2. An order given by a<br />

<strong>com</strong>mander; that is, the will <strong>of</strong> the <strong>com</strong>mander expressed for the purpose <strong>of</strong> bringing<br />

about a particular action. 3. A unit or units, an organization, or an area under the<br />

<strong>com</strong>mand <strong>of</strong> one individual. Also called CMD. See also area <strong>com</strong>mand; <strong>com</strong>batant<br />
