support agency — A federal department or agency designated to assist a specific primary<br />

agency with available resources, capabilities, or expertise in support <strong>of</strong> emergency<br />

support response operations, as coordinated by the representative <strong>of</strong> the primary<br />

agency. See also lead federal agency. (JP 3-28)<br />

supported <strong>com</strong>mander — 1. The <strong>com</strong>mander having primary responsibility for all aspects<br />

<strong>of</strong> a task assigned by the <strong>Joint</strong> Strategic Capabilities Plan or other joint operation<br />

planning authority. 2. In the context <strong>of</strong> joint operation planning, the <strong>com</strong>mander who<br />

prepares operation plans or operation orders in response to requirements <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Chairman <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Joint</strong> Chiefs <strong>of</strong> Staff. 3. In the context <strong>of</strong> a support <strong>com</strong>mand<br />

relationship, the <strong>com</strong>mander who receives assistance from another <strong>com</strong>mander’s force<br />

or capabilities, and who is responsible for ensuring that the supporting <strong>com</strong>mander<br />

supported unit — As related to contracted support, a supported unit is the organization that<br />

is the recipient, but not necessarily the requester <strong>of</strong>, contractor-provided support. See<br />

also requiring activity. (JP 4-10)<br />

supporting arms — Weapons and weapons systems <strong>of</strong> all types employed to support forces<br />

by indirect or direct fire. (JP 3-<strong>02</strong>)<br />

supporting arms coordination center — A single location on board an amphibious<br />

<strong>com</strong>mand ship in which all <strong>com</strong>munication facilities incident to the coordination <strong>of</strong> fire<br />

support <strong>of</strong> the artillery, air, and naval gunfire are centralized. This is the naval<br />

counterpart to the fire support coordination center utilized by the landing force. Also<br />

supporting attack — (*) An <strong>of</strong>fensive operation carried out in conjunction with a main<br />

attack and designed to achieve one or more <strong>of</strong> the following: a. deceive the enemy; b.<br />

destroy or pin down enemy forces which could interfere with the main attack; c.<br />

control ground whose occupation by the enemy will hinder the main attack; or d. force<br />

the enemy to <strong>com</strong>mit reserves prematurely or in an indecisive area.<br />

supporting <strong>com</strong>mander — 1. A <strong>com</strong>mander who provides augmentation forces or other<br />

support to a supported <strong>com</strong>mander or who develops a supporting plan. 2. In the context<br />

<strong>of</strong> a support <strong>com</strong>mand relationship, the <strong>com</strong>mander who aids, protects, <strong>com</strong>plements,<br />

or sustains another <strong>com</strong>mander’s force, and who is responsible for providing the<br />

assistance required by the supported <strong>com</strong>mander. See also support; supported<br />

supporting fire — Fire delivered by supporting units to assist or protect a unit in <strong>com</strong>bat.<br />
