assessment agent — The organization responsible for conducting an assessment <strong>of</strong> an<br />

approved joint publication. The assessment agent is assigned by the Director, J-7, <strong>Joint</strong><br />

Staff; normally US <strong>Joint</strong> Forces Command. Also called AA. (CJCSI 5120.<strong>02</strong>)<br />

asset (intelligence) — Any resource — person, group, relationship, instrument, installation,<br />

or supply — at the disposition <strong>of</strong> an intelligence organization for use in an operational<br />

or support role. Often used with a qualifying term such as agent asset or propaganda<br />

asset. (JP 2-0)<br />

asset validation — In intelligence use, the process used to determine the asset authenticity, reliability,<br />

utility, suitability, and degree <strong>of</strong> control the case <strong>of</strong>ficer or others have. (JP 2-01.2)<br />

asset visibility — Provides users with information on the location, movement, status, and<br />

identity <strong>of</strong> units, personnel, equipment, and supplies. It facilitates the capability to act<br />

upon that information to improve overall performance <strong>of</strong> the Department <strong>of</strong> Defense’s<br />

logistics practices. Also called AV. (JP 3-35)<br />

assign — 1. To place units or personnel in an organization where such placement is<br />

relatively permanent, and/or where such organization controls and administers the units<br />

or personnel for the primary function, or greater portion <strong>of</strong> the functions, <strong>of</strong> the unit or<br />

personnel. 2. To detail individuals to specific duties or functions where such duties or<br />

functions are primary and/or relatively permanent. See also attach. (JP 3-0)<br />

assistance in kind — The provision <strong>of</strong> material and services for a logistic exchange <strong>of</strong><br />

materials and services <strong>of</strong> equal value between the governments <strong>of</strong> eligible countries.<br />

Also called AIK. (JP 1-06)<br />

assumption — A supposition on the current situation or a presupposition on the future<br />

course <strong>of</strong> events, either or both assumed to be true in the absence <strong>of</strong> positive pro<strong>of</strong>,<br />

necessary to enable the <strong>com</strong>mander in the process <strong>of</strong> planning to <strong>com</strong>plete an estimate<br />

<strong>of</strong> the situation and make a decision on the course <strong>of</strong> action. (JP 5-0)<br />

atmospheric environment — The envelope <strong>of</strong> air surrounding the Earth, including its<br />

interfaces and interactions with the Earth’s solid or liquid surface. (JP 3-59)<br />

atomic weapon — See nuclear weapon.<br />

at sea — Includes the following maritime areas: foreign internal waters, archipelagic<br />

waters, and territorial seas; foreign contiguous zones; foreign exclusive economic<br />

zones; the high seas; and US-exclusive economic zone, territorial sea, and internal<br />

waters. (JP 3-32)<br />

attach — 1. The placement <strong>of</strong> units or personnel in an organization where such placement is<br />

relatively temporary. 2. The detailing <strong>of</strong> individuals to specific functions where such<br />

functions are secondary or relatively temporary. See also assign. (JP 3-0)<br />
