dual-capable aircraft — Allied and US fighter aircraft tasked and configured to perform<br />

either conventional or theater nuclear missions. Also called DCA.<br />

dual (multi)-purpose weapons — Weapons which possess the capability for effective<br />

application in two or more basically different military functions and/or levels <strong>of</strong><br />

conflict.<br />

dual-purpose weapon — A weapon designed for delivering effective fire against air or<br />

surface targets.<br />

dual-role tanker — Dual-role tankers carry support personnel, supplies, and equipment for<br />

the deploying force while escorting and/or refueling <strong>com</strong>bat aircraft to the area <strong>of</strong><br />

responsibility. Dual-role tankers can minimize the total lift requirement while<br />

providing critical cargo and personnel at the <strong>com</strong>bat aircraft’s time <strong>of</strong> arrival. See also<br />

due in — Quantities <strong>of</strong> materiel scheduled to be received from vendors, repair facilities,<br />

assembly operation, interdepot transfers, and other sources.<br />

dummy — See decoy.<br />

duty status - whereabouts unknown — A transitory casualty status, applicable only to<br />

military personnel, that is used when the responsible <strong>com</strong>mander suspects the member<br />

may be a casualty whose absence is involuntary, but does not feel sufficient evidence<br />

currently exists to make a definite determination <strong>of</strong> missing or deceased. Also called<br />

DUSTWUN. See also casualty status.<br />

dwell time — 1. The time cargo remains in a terminal’s in-transit storage area while<br />

awaiting shipment by clearance transportation. (JP 4-01.6) 2. The length <strong>of</strong> time a<br />

target is expected to remain in one location. (JP 3-60) 3. The period <strong>of</strong> time between<br />

the release from involuntary active and the reporting date for a subsequent tour <strong>of</strong><br />

active duty pursuant to Title 10, United States Code, Section 123<strong>02</strong>. Such time<br />

includes any voluntary active duty performed between two periods <strong>of</strong> involuntary<br />

active duty pursuant to Title 10, United States Code, Section 123<strong>02</strong>. (DODD 1235.10)<br />

dynamic targeting — Targeting that prosecutes targets identified too late, or not selected<br />

for action in time to be included in deliberate targeting. (JP 3-60)<br />

dynamic threat assessment — An intelligence assessment developed by the Defense<br />

Intelligence Agency that details the threat, capabilities, and intentions <strong>of</strong> adversaries in<br />

each <strong>of</strong> the priority plans in the Contingency Planning Guidance. Also called DTA.<br />
