hinterland, near — The area <strong>of</strong> land within an operational area <strong>of</strong> a specific beach or<br />

terminal operation — usually within 5 miles. (JP 4-01.6)<br />

holding point — (*) A geographically or electronically defined location used in stationing<br />

aircraft in flight in a predetermined pattern in accordance with air traffic control<br />

clearance. See also orbit point.<br />

homeland — The physical region that includes the continental United States, Alaska,<br />

Hawaii, United States possessions and territories, and surrounding territorial waters and<br />

airspace. (JP 3-28)<br />

homeland defense — The protection <strong>of</strong> United States sovereignty, territory, domestic<br />

population, and critical defense infrastructure against external threats and aggression or<br />

other threats as directed by the President. Also called HD. (JP 3-27)<br />

homeland security — A concerted national effort to prevent terrorist attacks within the<br />

United States; reduce America’s vulnerability to terrorism, major disasters, and other<br />

emergencies; and minimize the damage and recover from attacks, major disasters, and<br />

other emergencies that occur. Also called HS. (JP 3-28)<br />

home station — The permanent location <strong>of</strong> active duty units and Reserve Component units<br />

(e.g., location <strong>of</strong> armory or reserve center). See also active duty; Reserve<br />

Component. (JP 4-05)<br />

homing — The technique whereby a mobile station directs itself, or is directed, towards a<br />

source <strong>of</strong> primary or reflected energy, or to a specified point. (JP 3-50)<br />

homing guidance — A system by which a missile or torpedo steers itself towards a target<br />

by means <strong>of</strong> a self-contained mechanism which is activated by some distinguishing<br />

characteristics <strong>of</strong> the target. (JP 3-01)<br />

horizontal stowage — The lateral distribution <strong>of</strong> unit equipment or categories <strong>of</strong> supplies<br />

so that they can be unloaded simultaneously from two or more holds. (JP 3-<strong>02</strong>.1)<br />

hospital — A medical treatment facility capable <strong>of</strong> providing inpatient care. It is<br />

appropriately staffed and equipped to provide diagnostic and therapeutic services, as<br />

well as the necessary supporting services required to perform its assigned mission and<br />

functions. A hospital may, in addition, discharge the functions <strong>of</strong> a clinic.<br />

hostage rescue — A personnel recovery method used to recover isolated personnel who are<br />

specifically designated as hostages. Also called HR. (JP 3-50)<br />

host country — A nation which permits, either by written agreement or <strong>of</strong>ficial invitation,<br />

government representatives and/or agencies <strong>of</strong> another nation to operate, under<br />

specified conditions, within its borders. (JP 2-01.2)<br />
