Global Information Grid — The globally interconnected, end-to-end set <strong>of</strong> information<br />

capabilities, and associated processes for collecting, processing, storing, disseminating,<br />

and managing information on demand to warfighters, policy makers, and support<br />

personnel. The Global Information Grid includes owned and leased <strong>com</strong>munications<br />

and <strong>com</strong>puting systems and services, s<strong>of</strong>tware (including applications), data, security<br />

services, other associated services and National Security Systems. Also called GIG.<br />

global information infrastructure — The worldwide interconnection <strong>of</strong> <strong>com</strong>munications<br />

networks, <strong>com</strong>puters, databases, and consumer electronics that make vast amounts <strong>of</strong><br />

information available to users. The global information infrastructure en<strong>com</strong>passes a<br />

wide range <strong>of</strong> equipment, including cameras, scanners, keyboards, facsimile machines,<br />

<strong>com</strong>puters, switches, <strong>com</strong>pact disks, video and audio tape, cable, wire, satellites, fiberoptic<br />

transmission lines, networks <strong>of</strong> all types, televisions, monitors, printers, and much<br />

more. The friendly and adversary personnel who make decisions and handle the<br />

transmitted information constitute a critical <strong>com</strong>ponent <strong>of</strong> the global information<br />

Global Network Operations Center — United States Strategic Command operational<br />

element responsible for providing global satellite <strong>com</strong>munications system status;<br />

maintaining global situational awareness to include each <strong>com</strong>batant <strong>com</strong>mander’s<br />

planned and current operations as well as contingency plans; supporting radio<br />

frequency interference resolution management; supporting satellite anomaly resolution<br />

and management; facilitating satellite <strong>com</strong>munications interface to the defense<br />

information infrastructure; and managing the regional satellite <strong>com</strong>munications support<br />

centers. Also called GNC. (JP 6-0)<br />

Global Patient Movement Requirements Center — A joint activity reporting directly to<br />

the Commander, US Transportation Command, the Department <strong>of</strong> Defense single<br />

manager for the strategic and continental United States regulation and movement <strong>of</strong><br />

uniformed services and other authorized patients. The Global Patient Movement<br />

Requirements Center provides medical regulating and aeromedical evacuation<br />

scheduling for the continental United States and intertheater operations and provides<br />

support to the theater patient movement requirements centers. The Global Patient<br />

Movement Requirements Center coordinates with supporting resource providers to<br />

identify available assets and <strong>com</strong>municates transport to bed plans to the appropriate<br />

transportation agency for execution. Also called GPMRC. See also medical<br />

Global Positioning System — A satellite-based radio navigation system operated by the<br />

Department <strong>of</strong> Defense to provide all military, civil, and <strong>com</strong>mercial users with precise<br />

positioning, navigation, and timing. Also called GPS. (JP 3-14)<br />
