counterespionage — That aspect <strong>of</strong> counterintelligence designed to detect, destroy,<br />

neutralize, exploit, or prevent espionage activities through identification, penetration,<br />

manipulation, deception, and repression <strong>of</strong> individuals, groups, or organizations<br />

conducting or suspected <strong>of</strong> conducting espionage activities. (JP 2-01.2)<br />

counterfire — Fire intended to destroy or neutralize enemy weapons. Includes<br />

counterbattery and countermortar fire. (JP 3-09)<br />

counterforce — The employment <strong>of</strong> strategic air and missile forces in an effort to destroy,<br />

or render impotent, selected military capabilities <strong>of</strong> an enemy force under any <strong>of</strong> the<br />

circumstances by which hostilities may be initiated.<br />

counterguerrilla operations — Operations and activities conducted by armed forces,<br />

paramilitary forces, or nonmilitary agencies against guerrillas. (JP 3-24)<br />

counterinsurgency — Comprehensive civilian and military efforts taken to defeat an<br />

insurgency and to address any core grievances. Also called COIN. (JP 3-24)<br />

counterintelligence — Information gathered and activities conducted to identify, deceive,<br />

exploit, disrupt, or protect against espionage, other intelligence activities, sabotage, or<br />

assassinations conducted for or on behalf <strong>of</strong> foreign powers, organizations or persons or<br />

their agents, or international terrorist organizations or activities. Also called CI. See<br />

counterintelligence activities — One or more <strong>of</strong> the five functions <strong>of</strong> counterintelligence:<br />

operations, investigations, collection, analysis and production, and functional services. See<br />

also analysis and production; collection; counterintelligence; operation. (JP 2-01.2)<br />

counterintelligence collection — The systematic acquisition <strong>of</strong> information (through<br />

investigations, operations, or liaison) concerning espionage, sabotage, terrorism, other<br />

intelligence activities or assassinations conducted by or on behalf <strong>of</strong> foreign<br />

governments or elements there<strong>of</strong>, foreign organizations, or foreign persons that are<br />

directed against or threaten Department <strong>of</strong> Defense interests. See also<br />

counterintelligence investigation — An <strong>of</strong>ficial, systematic search for facts to determine<br />

whether a person(s) is engaged in activities that may be injurious to US national<br />

security or advantageous to a foreign power. See also counterintelligence. (JP 2-01.2)<br />

counterintelligence operational tasking authority — The levying <strong>of</strong> counterintelligence<br />

requirements specific to joint military activities and operations. Counterintelligence<br />

operational tasking authority is exercised through supporting <strong>com</strong>ponents. Also called<br />
