tactical minefield — A minefield that is employed to directly attack enemy maneuver as part<br />

<strong>of</strong> a formation obstacle plan and is laid to delay, channel, or break up an enemy advance,<br />

giving the defending element a positional advantage over the attacker. (JP 3-15)<br />

tactical obstacles — Those obstacles employed to disrupt enemy formations, to turn them<br />

into a desired area, to fix them in position under direct and indirect fires, and to block<br />

enemy penetrations. (JP 3-15)<br />

tactical operations center — A physical groupment <strong>of</strong> those elements <strong>of</strong> a general and<br />

special staff concerned with the current tactical operations and the tactical support<br />

there<strong>of</strong>. Also called TOC. (JP 3-33)<br />

tactical questioning — Direct questioning by any Department <strong>of</strong> Defense personnel <strong>of</strong> a<br />

captured or detained person to obtain time-sensitive tactical intelligence information, at<br />

or near the point <strong>of</strong> capture or detention and consistent with applicable law. Also called<br />

tactical recovery <strong>of</strong> aircraft and personnel — A Marine Corps mission performed by an<br />

assigned and briefed aircrew for the specific purpose <strong>of</strong> the recovery <strong>of</strong> personnel,<br />

equipment, and/or aircraft when the tactical situation precludes search and rescue assets<br />

from responding and when survivors and their location have been confirmed. Also<br />

called TRAP. (JP 3-50)<br />

tactical reserve — A part <strong>of</strong> a force held under the control <strong>of</strong> the <strong>com</strong>mander as a<br />

maneuvering force to influence future action.<br />

tactical warning — 1. A warning after initiation <strong>of</strong> a threatening or hostile act based on an<br />

evaluation <strong>of</strong> information from all available sources. 2. In satellite and missile<br />

surveillance, a notification to operational <strong>com</strong>mand centers that a specific threat event<br />

is occurring. The <strong>com</strong>ponent elements that describe threat events are as follows: a.<br />

country <strong>of</strong> origin — Country or countries initiating hostilities; b. event type and size<br />

— Identification <strong>of</strong> the type <strong>of</strong> event and determination <strong>of</strong> the size or number <strong>of</strong><br />

weapons; c. country under attack — Determined by observing trajectory <strong>of</strong> an<br />

object and predicting its impact point; and d. event time — Time the hostile event<br />

tactical warning and attack assessment — A <strong>com</strong>posite term. See separate definitions for<br />

tactics — The employment and ordered arrangement <strong>of</strong> forces in relation to each other. See<br />

tagline — A line attached to a draft <strong>of</strong> cargo or container to provide control and minimize<br />
