GSC Sentinel-2 PDGS OCD Issue 1 Revision 2 (draft) - 25.07.2010 GMES-GSEG-EOPG-TN-09-0008 page 174 of 350 Beyond the scope of the core PDGS, other third-party entities will potentially add-up to the PDGS extended layout, namely: Local Ground Stations entitled to receive Sentinel-2 data in real-time via X-Band (or Ka-Band when relayed from EDRS); Collaborative data-access mirroring centres (cf. 4.8.1.1) acting as core PDGS archives locally mirroring the PDGS data from their premises. The following paragraphs provide an insight over specialised core PDGS configurations starting from an X-Band station based layout to configurations with EDRS in operations. 4.9.1 BASELINE OPERATION LAYOUT The PDGS baseline operation layout is based on a CGS network of at least four X-Band stations. It assumes that at least two CGSs are situated in polar areas hence allowing receiving at least half of the mission data. The other half will be received by complementary X-Band stations located at lower latitude ranges. It further accounts for one CGS with limited connectivity resources to the mainstream European communication network, hence potentially creating a bottleneck for data access. All CGSs but one will be entitled to receive NRT data. A CGS centred over Europe will bring the additional benefit of bringing a RT access capability over most European land areas (cf. section 4.3.10.2) as well as contemporaneous direct-downlink capabilities over European LGSs (cf. section 4.5.4.3). To optimally respond to the data-access requirements, two additional and complementary PACs will be operated in Europe to mirror the data received from the CGS network and optimise data-access performance: ○ One will be dedicated to: o Processing the data repatriated from the remaining CGS up to Level-1C; o Mirroring the archive of all cloud-free data processed at Level-1C (S2MSI1C) for the last 12 months after sensing; o Providing reprocessing capabilities from an on-line Level-0 archive of 3 months. ○ A second one will be dedicated to providing medium term storage of the S2MS1C coverage of Europe for one year. Each PAC will additionally hold a collocated LTA service providing LTDP services in full redundancy over the mission lifetime. The three main CGSs and the two PACs will all participate to the federated data-access network.
