○ Local, covering urban areas, sites which rapidly change and areas with an high
activity;
○ Continental, for wall to wall inventory Europe for land use and land cover at HR and
MR;
○ Global, for land services which contribute to the understanding of global environment
and changes and resource management;
The Sentinel-2 mission will supply principally the Local and Continental component mainly
because of the spatial resolution of the optical instrument (≥ 10 m).
The land services with requirements having an implication on Sentinel-2 PDGS operations
are:
○ Fast Track FP7 Land Monitoring Core Service Projects (LMCS):
o LMCS_001 – EEA-38 wall-to-wall coverage
o LMCS_009 – High Risk Areas
o LMCS_010 – Agro-environmental analysis
o LMCS_012a – Europe land cover of forests, HR coverage
o LMCS_003 – Seasonal/annual land change monitoring: Africa selected areas
(HR)
o LMCS_006c – Selected sites for validation of MR and LR biophysical products
○ ESA GMES Service Element (GSE) Projects:
o LGSE_001 – Global Monitoring Food Security: Crop mapping: Africa selected
areas (HR)
o LGSE_003 – Forest Monitoring: REDD
A summary of the needs from the LMCS as well as other land services is described hereafter
as relevant to Sentinel-2 type of sensors:
○ Acquisition tasking needs:
Data requirements from the LMCS and Land services in general are mostly expressed
as monitoring of a area of interest and revisit frequency requirements, or eventually, as
coverage requirements.
A systematic pre-defined Sentinel-2 data observation capability is thus necessary.
Although these services may not systematically require all acquired data, the need for
consistent, cloud-free and complete coverages (e.g. a cloud-free seasonal/annual
mapping of Europe) imposes continuous and systematic observations to increase the
probability of clear-sky observations.
