GSC Sentinel-2 PDGS OCD
Issue 1 Revision 2 (draft) - 25.07.2010
GMES-GSEG-EOPG-TN-09-0008
In this respect, the perimeter of the Sentinel-2 PDGS system within the overall GSC is
delimited as follows:
○ On one side, it is delimited as a sub-system of the Sentinel-2 system responsible for
payload planning, data acquisition and processing of the Sentinel-2 satellite data, while
contributing to the overall monitoring of the payload and platform in coordination with
the Sentinel-2 FOS.
○ On the other side, it is delimited as a component of the GSC ground infrastructure,
responsible for feeding Sentinel-2 data to the GSS as required by the DAP through the
GSCDA similarly to any GCM. In addition to its strict role vis-à-vis the GSS, the scope
of the Sentinel-2 PDGS is enlarged for the provision of Sentinel-2 data to the Users
following the Sentinel-2 Data Policy.
With respect to the GSCDA as and its sub-systems such as the CDS, the Sentinel-2
PDGS is considered as a GCM infrastructure. As such, the PDGS contributes to the
GSCDA by implementing its applicable interfaces vis-à-vis GCMs as relevant to
Sentinel-2.
On another side, the PDGS integrates ESA’s Multi-Mission User-Services (MMUS) for
data cataloguing and access for the general User support services.
Starting at Phase-E1 of Sentinel-2A, the PDGS will assume different operational roles in time
as driven by the launch of the Sentinel-2 units and their respective commissioning phases:
○ Following Sentinel-2A Launch and Early Operations Phase (LEOP) and payload switchon
activities, the PDGS will start operating its services vis-à-vis the Sentinel-2 system
according to the Commissioning Phase requirements. During this phase, the PDGS
services vis-à-vis downstream entities such as the GSCDA will not be considered
operational.
○ Following successful commissioning phase of the Sentinel-2A unit (assumed 3 months
after launch), the PDGS will start full operations vis-à-vis the GSC with one-spacecraft.
○ Following Sentinel-2B LEOP and payload switch-on activities, the PDGS will, in parallel
to its operational role vis-à-vis Sentinel-2A, support the commissioning activities of the
additional unit. During this phase, the PDGS services vis-à-vis downstream entities
such as the GSCDA are considered operational for Sentinel-2A only.
○ Following successful commissioning phase of the Sentinel-2B unit, the PDGS will reach
its final operational phase vis-à-vis the Sentinel-2 constellation.
In this respect, the scope of the document includes the operation concepts applicable to all
four of the above phases. The applicability of the PDGS services and operations specific to
Phase-E1 or Phase-E2 of each spacecraft unit will be clarified in the relevant sections.
In particular, a specific interface of the Sentinel-2 PDGS with CNES (Centre National d’Etudes
Spatiales) in Toulouse will be activated during the commissioning periods of Sentinel-2A and
Sentinel-2B as required in the Sentinel-2 Ground-Segment Requirements Document [GSRD]
