GSC Sentinel-2 PDGS OCD
4.3.7 FOS OPERATION CONSTRAINTS
4.3.7.1 Mission Schedule Uplink and Mission Planning Loop
Whilst the PDGS will be responsible for generating the satellite plan including payload and
downlink activities, the FOS will be in-charge of translating it into a spacecraft understandable
schedule and to uplink the derived schedule to the spacecraft in advance of operations using
the S-Band channel operated from the TMTC station in Kiruna (Sweden). As such both PDGS
and FOS work-flows for mission planning and scheduling will have to be coordinated.
The mission planning operations to be performed by the PDGS will be constrained by the
FOS operation concepts themselves cascading from spacecraft capabilities and constraints
regarding scheduling and uplink.
The FOS will support two complementary operation scenarios for schedule uplink:
○ A nominal uplink scenario, activated recurrently every two weeks to increment the onboard
plan with the 15 subsequent days of autonomous on-board operation;
○ An unplanned uplink scenario, to be used for re-planning, activated on-request and
allowing altering the on-board plan in parts or as a whole down to a couple of days
before its execution on-board.
The S-Band uplink opportunities are constrained to be performed during working-days and at
specific Kiruna passes pre-allocated for Sentinel-2 as depicted on Figure 4-3. Two uplink
opportunities are pre-booked for each Sentinel-2 spacecraft, one nominal pass and one
backup pass to provision for contingency at FOS level.
