Child Development ><br />
a direct service and labor<strong>at</strong>ory school housing four<br />
classrooms. It serves an ethnically diverse, intern<strong>at</strong>ional<br />
popul<strong>at</strong>ion of youngsters and eagerly seeks to<br />
serve children with a wide variety of special needs.<br />
<strong>Tufts</strong> students and faculty, particularly within the<br />
Department of Child Development, can observe,<br />
conduct research, and particip<strong>at</strong>e in a variety of<br />
practice teaching experiences. <strong>The</strong> Special Friends<br />
Program, jointly sponsored and supervised by the<br />
center and the university’s Leonard Carmichael<br />
Society, offers an opportunity for any interested<br />
undergradu<strong>at</strong>e to form a close one-to-one rel<strong>at</strong>ionship<br />
with a preschool or kindergarten child. Parents<br />

Evelyn G. Pitcher Curriculum Resource Labor<strong>at</strong>ory<br />
Adjoining the department and the children’s school<br />
is the Evelyn G. Pitcher Curriculum Resource<br />
Labor<strong>at</strong>ory, with studio, shop, and audiovisual<br />
spaces. <strong>The</strong> labor<strong>at</strong>ory allows space for the department’s<br />
multidisciplinary work with m<strong>at</strong>hem<strong>at</strong>ics,<br />
science, and technology educ<strong>at</strong>ion—a new initi<strong>at</strong>ive<br />
th<strong>at</strong> involves the Eliot-Pearson Department of<br />
Child Development as well as computer science,<br />
engineering, and educ<strong>at</strong>ion departments. Within<br />
the curriculum labor<strong>at</strong>ory, child development<br />
majors can study and develop m<strong>at</strong>erials th<strong>at</strong> are<br />
then used with young children in a wide range of<br />
settings, including classrooms, museums, libraries,<br />

Institute for Applied Research in Youth Development<br />
<strong>The</strong> institute cre<strong>at</strong>es programs and projects th<strong>at</strong><br />
use the framework of applied developmental science<br />
to promote healthy, positive development among<br />
diverse children, adolescents, families, and communities.<br />

UNDERGRADUATE concentrATION<br />
REQUIREMENTS<br />
Major in Child Development<br />
Ten courses, including Child Development 1 (no<br />
substitutes allowed), and an additional course with<br />
a developmental science focus. With departmental<br />
approval, one “rel<strong>at</strong>ed fields” course can be from<br />
outside the department. Students are required to<br />
have <strong>at</strong> least one applied (e.g., internship) or<br />
research experience as well as three courses from<br />
within one of the Department’s four areas of<br />
specializ<strong>at</strong>ion or focus (see above). Please see the<br />
Department’s website for complete inform<strong>at</strong>ion on<br />
requirements.<br />
Early Childhood (Pre-K to Grade 2), 4+1,<br />
Joint BA/MAT Program<br />
With a focus on urban educ<strong>at</strong>ion, students choosing<br />
this option will receive a BA in Child Development<br />
(10 credits) and then an MAT after one more<br />
year. During their undergradu<strong>at</strong>e years, the student<br />
will need to take two courses in Child Development<br />
beyond the requirement for the BA. <strong>The</strong>se courses<br />
will be credited towards the MAT degree. <strong>The</strong><br />
MAT year includes a significant tuition reduction<br />
as well as the possibility of other financial aid. See<br />
below description of MAT program.<br />
UNDERGRADUATE MINOR ProgrAM<br />
<strong>The</strong> Department of Child Development offers a<br />
minor in child development. Five courses are<br />
required, two of which are to be chosen from Child<br />
Development 1, 51 or 151, 61 or 161, and 155.<br />
Three additional electives are to be chosen from<br />
other course offerings within the department.<br />
AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE (ASL)<br />
<strong>The</strong> department offers three levels of American<br />
Sign Language. Undergradu<strong>at</strong>es completing all<br />
three can have ASL fulfill Part I or Part II of the<br />
foreign language (found<strong>at</strong>ion) requirement.<br />
GRADUATE ProgrAM<br />
<strong>The</strong> Department of Child Development offers the<br />
master of arts degree, a joint master of arts degree<br />
with the Department of Urban and Environmental<br />
Policy and Planning, the master of arts in teaching<br />
(M.A.T.) degree, and the Ph.D. degree. Along with<br />
the standard m<strong>at</strong>erial sent to the gradu<strong>at</strong>e school,<br />
applicants for admission to these gradu<strong>at</strong>e programs<br />
