Urban and Environmental Policy and Planning ><br />

All our courses focus on urban, social and/or<br />

environmental policy issues. You can choose from<br />

one or more of these areas, or you can choose to<br />

focus on the intersection(s) between these areas,<br />

namely the arena of sustainable development.<br />

deadline for the MA program is January 15; the<br />

applic<strong>at</strong>ion deadline for intern<strong>at</strong>ional applicants is<br />

December 31; the deadline for the MPP program is<br />

April 30. L<strong>at</strong>e applic<strong>at</strong>ions may be considered.<br />

INTERDISCIPLINARY doctorATE<br />

<strong>The</strong> department particip<strong>at</strong>es in <strong>Tufts</strong>’ interdisciplinary<br />

doctoral program, which accepts a limited<br />

number of Ph.D. candid<strong>at</strong>es (applicants must have<br />

completed a master’s degree) who design an<br />

individualized program of study. Students interested<br />

in this degree should address their inquiries to the<br />

Office of Gradu<strong>at</strong>e Studies. (See Interdisciplinary<br />

Doctor<strong>at</strong>e in this bulletin for program description.)<br />

COMBINED AND coLLABORATIVE DEGREE<br />

ProgrAMS<br />

<strong>The</strong> Department of Urban and Environmental<br />

Policy and Planning offers joint master’s degree<br />

programs with the Departments of Biology, Child<br />

Development, Civil and Environmental<br />

Engineering, and Economics. Students complete<br />

core requirements in UEP and one of the affili<strong>at</strong>ed<br />

departments to receive a single master’s degree<br />

(MA or MS). It is possible to complete joint degree<br />

requirements in two years. Interested students<br />

should check with individual departments regarding<br />

specific program requirements and applic<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

procedure. UEP also offers dual degree programs<br />

with the Fletcher School, the Department of Civil<br />

and Environmental Engineering in the School of<br />

Engineering, the Friedman School of Nutrition<br />

Science and Policy, the Boston College Law School,<br />

and the Boston College Carroll School of<br />

Management.<br />

Please note: these programs are not available to students<br />

in the MPP program.<br />

UEP and Biology<br />

<strong>The</strong> joint master’s degree in urban and environmental<br />

policy and planning/biology responds to<br />

the need for biological literacy by professionals<br />

working in policy areas. <strong>The</strong> program is designed<br />

for individuals who are interested in understanding<br />

the technical side of policy and planning, including<br />

the implement<strong>at</strong>ion of policy (e.g., regul<strong>at</strong>ions)<br />

and the formul<strong>at</strong>ion of policy (e.g., legisl<strong>at</strong>ion), and<br />

accounting for biological aspects of land-use issues<br />

(e.g., working with governmental and nongovernmental<br />

conserv<strong>at</strong>ion and planning organiz<strong>at</strong>ions).<br />

Students have the choice of receiving the MA or<br />

MS degree.<br />
