Urban and Environmental Policy and Planning ><br />
Interested students must submit separ<strong>at</strong>e<br />
applic<strong>at</strong>ions to each program indic<strong>at</strong>ing a preference<br />
for the dual degree. Each school reviews candid<strong>at</strong>es<br />
based on its own requirements and criteria. <strong>The</strong><br />
candid<strong>at</strong>e’s admission to UEP is not affected by the<br />
decision of the Carroll School of Management. For<br />

CERTIFICATE ProgrAMS<br />
In addition to the master’s programs, the<br />
Department of Urban and Environmental Policy<br />
and Planning offers two certific<strong>at</strong>e programs in<br />
community sustainability. <strong>The</strong> certific<strong>at</strong>es in<br />
management of community organiz<strong>at</strong>ions and<br />
community environmental studies emphasize<br />
particip<strong>at</strong>ory str<strong>at</strong>egies for community selfdetermin<strong>at</strong>ion<br />
and sustainability. <strong>The</strong>se flexible<br />
programs enable working adults to gain the vital<br />
management and environmental skills necessary to<br />
enhance current careers or to move into new<br />
professional work. A third certific<strong>at</strong>e in program<br />
evalu<strong>at</strong>ion is offered in collabor<strong>at</strong>ion with the<br />
Department of Child Development, the Gerald J.<br />
and Dorothy R. Friedman School of Nutrition<br />
Science and Policy, and the School of Medicine.<br />
To earn a certific<strong>at</strong>e, students successfully<br />
complete four courses for credit. <strong>The</strong> certific<strong>at</strong>e in<br />
program evalu<strong>at</strong>ion also requires completion of an<br />
applied practicum. Courses for the certific<strong>at</strong>e<br />
programs are drawn from the curriculum of the<br />
MA program. It is possible to complete a certific<strong>at</strong>e<br />
program in as little as one year or to extend it over<br />
several years. <strong>The</strong> certific<strong>at</strong>e programs are open to<br />

Certific<strong>at</strong>e Program in Community Environmental<br />
Studies<br />
<strong>The</strong> certific<strong>at</strong>e in community environmental studies<br />
(CES) provides professional training for careers in<br />
the rapidly growing and changing environmental<br />
field. <strong>The</strong> program offers a rich and varied selection<br />
of environmental courses in planning, policy,<br />
economics, engineering, and science complemented<br />
by courses in negoti<strong>at</strong>ion, law, and nonprofit<br />
management. This program is designed for citizen<br />
advoc<strong>at</strong>es seeking to promote environmentally<br />
sustainable communities, environmental specialists<br />
in companies who interact with community leaders,<br />
and public agency personnel. (See Community<br />

description.)<br />
