<strong>Tufts</strong> Programs Abroad ><br />

Please note: Only directory inform<strong>at</strong>ion is made<br />

available to the public. Directory inform<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

includes whether a student is in <strong>at</strong>tendance <strong>at</strong> the<br />

university and the student’s local telephone number<br />

and email address. Students may request th<strong>at</strong><br />

directory inform<strong>at</strong>ion not be released to anyone by<br />

completing a privacy request form available <strong>at</strong> the<br />

Student Services Desk. Such requests are subject to<br />

the exemptions provided by certain policies,<br />

including FERPA and the P<strong>at</strong>riot Act of 2001.<br />

Students should verify implement<strong>at</strong>ion of their<br />

request by calling Dowling Hall. A change in<br />

phone number, along with the request not to release<br />

the inform<strong>at</strong>ion, is suggested as the best way to<br />

ensure privacy.<br />

<strong>Tufts</strong> Programs Abroad<br />

<strong>Tufts</strong> <strong>University</strong> has been offering foreign study<br />

programs for more than four decades, and <strong>at</strong><br />

present offers undergradu<strong>at</strong>e programs for juniors<br />

and seniors to study in Chile, China, Ghana, Hong<br />

Kong, Japan, London, Madrid, Oxford, Paris, and<br />

Tübingen. Non-<strong>Tufts</strong> students may be admitted<br />

provided there is space available. In all programs,<br />

students <strong>at</strong>tend the design<strong>at</strong>ed college or university.<br />

Integr<strong>at</strong>ion into a foreign university and the<br />

cultural and social life of the host country is the aim<br />

of <strong>Tufts</strong> Programs Abroad. Further inform<strong>at</strong>ion is<br />

<strong>Tufts</strong> in Chile<br />

A program of study <strong>at</strong> the <strong>University</strong> of Chile is<br />

available for the fall semester or the full year. <strong>The</strong><br />

<strong>University</strong> of Chile—one of L<strong>at</strong>in America’s oldest<br />

and most important universities—is loc<strong>at</strong>ed in<br />

Santiago, a metropolis set in a valley 3,000 feet up<br />

in the Andes. Santiago is home to many United<br />

N<strong>at</strong>ions and other intern<strong>at</strong>ional organiz<strong>at</strong>ions for<br />

the region and is one of L<strong>at</strong>in America’s leading<br />

intellectual and cultural centers. Participants, who<br />

are expected to have completed Spanish 21-22<br />

(Composition and Convers<strong>at</strong>ion) or the equivalent,<br />

enroll in regular courses <strong>at</strong> the <strong>University</strong> of Chile<br />

and live with Chilean families.<br />

A resident director provides academic advising,<br />

assists with homestays and extracurricular activities,<br />

and serves as liaison with the <strong>University</strong> of Chile.<br />

<strong>The</strong> program is of particular interest to students in<br />

L<strong>at</strong>in American studies, intern<strong>at</strong>ional rel<strong>at</strong>ions, and<br />

environmental studies, but students from all majors<br />

are invited to apply.<br />

<strong>Tufts</strong> in China<br />

<strong>The</strong> <strong>Tufts</strong>-in-China program offers a fall semester<br />

<strong>at</strong> Zhejiang <strong>University</strong> in Hangzhou, China.<br />

Hangzhou is the capital city of the Zhejiang<br />

Province and is loc<strong>at</strong>ed about two hours southwest<br />

of Shanghai. Once the capital city of the Southern<br />

Song Dynasty (1127–1279), it is one of the<br />

best-known cities in China, both for its long and<br />

rich history and for its n<strong>at</strong>ural beauty. <strong>The</strong> region is<br />

famous for such products as silk and tea. <strong>The</strong> main<br />

campus of Zhejiang <strong>University</strong> is situ<strong>at</strong>ed near the<br />

picturesque West Lake, whose n<strong>at</strong>ural beauty was<br />

celebr<strong>at</strong>ed by ancient poets. Zhejiang <strong>University</strong><br />

was established in 1998 when four individual<br />

universities were brought together. It is currently<br />

the biggest university in China, both in size (39,000<br />

students) and in range of disciplines (115 undergradu<strong>at</strong>e<br />

specialties).<br />

<strong>The</strong> <strong>Tufts</strong>-in-China program is open to students<br />

who have completed Chinese 4. Intensive instruction<br />

in Chinese language, as well as courses taught<br />

in English in such subjects as history, Chinese<br />

culture, and liter<strong>at</strong>ure are offered. Students are<br />

housed in the new intern<strong>at</strong>ional dormitory on<br />

campus. A resident director provides academic<br />

advising and extracurricular social and cultural<br />

activities.<br />
