Prize Scholarships and Academic Awards ><br />

and expertise in the production of an exemplary research<br />

paper or project for the first year writing program. First<br />

prize is $500 and second prize is $250 in each of the three<br />

c<strong>at</strong>egories listed below: Eng 1-4 or any course taken to<br />

fulfill the college writing requirement, 001-99 level course,<br />

100-200 level course.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Elizabeth Verveer Tishler Prize in Music Performance,<br />

established in 1984 by Elizabeth Verveer Tishler,<br />

J’31, is awarded on the basis of a competition, open to all<br />

undergradu<strong>at</strong>es except those enrolled in the <strong>Tufts</strong>-NEC<br />

dual-degree program. In order to be informed of the rules<br />

of the competition, those intending to compete must<br />

register not l<strong>at</strong>er than December 1 with the chair of the<br />

music department. Performance will be limited to classical,<br />

jazz, or modern work.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Max Tishler Prize Scholarship, established in 1951 by<br />

Merck and Co., Inc., to honor Dr. Max Tishler of the Class of<br />

1928, H’55, is awarded each year to an outstanding student<br />

in the sciences, preferably in chemistry, entering the senior<br />

year.<br />

Trefethen Research Award. <strong>The</strong> Lloyd MacGregor<br />

Trefethen Award is named in honor of Lloyd Trefethen,<br />

professor of Mechanical Engineering, and is presented<br />

annually to mechanical engineering senior who has<br />

conducted outstanding undergradu<strong>at</strong>e research.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Norbert Wiener Award in M<strong>at</strong>hem<strong>at</strong>ics is given on<br />

those rare occasions when a very young student exhibits<br />

such prodigious strength in m<strong>at</strong>hem<strong>at</strong>ics as to recall the<br />

highly unusual talents of the child prodigy Norbert Wiener,<br />

LA1909, who went on to become one of the giants of<br />

twentieth-century m<strong>at</strong>hem<strong>at</strong>ics. Aside from his vast legacy<br />

within m<strong>at</strong>hem<strong>at</strong>ics, he left his mark on popular culture by<br />

founding the discipline and coining the term “cybernetics,”<br />

which has spawned today’s notions of cyberspace.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Etta and Harry Winokur Prize for Outstanding<br />

Achievement in Artistic or Scholarly Work Award in the<br />

Department of Music for music majors in junior or senior<br />

years is given in recognition of outstanding achievement in<br />

artistic work such as composition or performance, and/or<br />

scholarly works such as a thesis.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Etta and Harry Winokur Prize for Outstanding<br />

Contribution to Performance Award in the Department<br />

of Music for music majors in junior or senior years is given<br />

in recognition of continuing outstanding contribution to<br />

the performance activities sponsored by the music<br />

department, such as leadership in performance studies and<br />

department ensembles, chamber groups, and recitals, and/<br />

or leadership in audience development, concert management,<br />

and arts administr<strong>at</strong>ion.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Marianne J. H. Witherby Prize in Archaeology was<br />

established by Marianne Witherby, an alumna of <strong>Tufts</strong> who<br />

is a devoted supporter of archaeological studies <strong>at</strong> the<br />

university. <strong>The</strong> prize is awarded each year to an archaeology<br />

major in recognition of scholastic ability, dedic<strong>at</strong>ion to the<br />

discipline, and resourcefulness.<br />

<strong>The</strong> William Frank Wy<strong>at</strong>t Prize, established in 1962 for<br />

excellence in the transl<strong>at</strong>ion of Greek or L<strong>at</strong>in, is awarded<br />

by the Department of Classics to the student who best<br />

exemplifies Professor Wy<strong>at</strong>t’s sound scholarship and<br />

c<strong>at</strong>holicity of interest. Professor Wy<strong>at</strong>t was a teacher of<br />

Greek <strong>at</strong> <strong>Tufts</strong> from 1914 until his de<strong>at</strong>h in 1961, and<br />

chairman of the classics department from its establishment<br />

in 1940 to 1952.<br />

<strong>The</strong> John W. and K<strong>at</strong>herine L. Zarker Award for<br />

Excellence in Classical Studies is awarded to a student<br />

who has demonstr<strong>at</strong>ed overall excellence in studies as<br />

determined by the members of the Department of Classics.<br />

Preference will be given, but not limited, to students who<br />

plan to pursue a teaching career.<br />
