CERTIFICATE ProgrAM<br />

<strong>The</strong> Certific<strong>at</strong>e program is offered on a non-degree,<br />

part-time basis to occup<strong>at</strong>ional therapists seeking<br />

advanced professional educ<strong>at</strong>ion in occup<strong>at</strong>ional<br />

therapy or preparing to enter a gradu<strong>at</strong>e degree<br />

program.<br />

<strong>The</strong> certific<strong>at</strong>e program gives students the<br />

option of focusing on an area of specializ<strong>at</strong>ion,<br />

such as hand and upper extremity rehabilit<strong>at</strong>ion,<br />

occup<strong>at</strong>ional therapy in the schools, or working<br />

with a faculty advisor to design their own program<br />

of study. <strong>The</strong>se programs are offered through the<br />

Hand and Upper-Extremity Rehabilit<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

<strong>The</strong> hand and upper extremity rehabilit<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

specializ<strong>at</strong>ion is intended for practicing occup<strong>at</strong>ional<br />

therapists who would like to gain knowledge<br />

in the specialty area of hand and upper extremity<br />

therapy. Occup<strong>at</strong>ional therapists who complete this<br />

course series are eligible to apply for a hand therapy<br />

clinical fellowship <strong>at</strong> the Massachusetts General<br />

Hospital. Students who do not elect to pursue the<br />

fellowship will still receive a certific<strong>at</strong>e of advanced<br />

professional study upon completion of the four<br />

courses.<br />

<strong>The</strong> certific<strong>at</strong>e requires four course credits as<br />

follows:<br />

School-Based Practice<br />

This certific<strong>at</strong>e in school-based practice is intended<br />

for licensed occup<strong>at</strong>ional therapists interested in<br />

expanding their knowledge base to become<br />

specialized practitioners in the provision of academically<br />

relevant occup<strong>at</strong>ional therapy services in<br />

public schools. <strong>Tufts</strong> Department of Occup<strong>at</strong>ional<br />

<strong>The</strong>rapy students who are interested in this content<br />

and practice area are also invited to apply. <strong>The</strong>rapists<br />

who complete this four-course series will learn how<br />

to influence services within their schools consistent<br />

with special educ<strong>at</strong>ion law and the American<br />

Occup<strong>at</strong>ional <strong>The</strong>rapy Associ<strong>at</strong>ion standards.<br />

This certific<strong>at</strong>e requires the following:<br />

One Research Course (select one)<br />

One Content Course in the area of services to<br />

children (to be approved by advisor)<br />

Advanced Professional Studies<br />

Occup<strong>at</strong>ional therapists are confronted with administr<strong>at</strong>ive<br />

and supervisory responsibilities and the<br />

need for increased specializ<strong>at</strong>ion. Areas of practice<br />

such as health and wellness consulting, technology<br />

and assistive device development, and priv<strong>at</strong>e<br />

practice community health services are emerging<br />

practice areas. To help occup<strong>at</strong>ional therapists meet<br />

these demands, <strong>Tufts</strong> Department of Occup<strong>at</strong>ional<br />

<strong>The</strong>rapy, in conjunction with the Office of Gradu<strong>at</strong>e<br />

Studies, offers a part-time program, the Certific<strong>at</strong>e<br />

of Advanced Professional Study.<br />

<strong>The</strong> certific<strong>at</strong>e requires four course credits as<br />

follows:<br />

OTS 209 Clinical Research (or equivalent with advisor<br />

consent)<br />

Specialty Courses: Three specialty courses with an<br />

integr<strong>at</strong>ed focus are required. <strong>The</strong>se courses and<br />

other electives are offered on the basis of interest,<br />

enrollment, and availability. Elective gradu<strong>at</strong>e-level<br />

courses <strong>at</strong> <strong>Tufts</strong> may be substituted based on a<br />

student’s needs. An individual course of study is<br />

arranged with the program adviser.<br />
