<strong>The</strong> degree of Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of<br />
Science is conferred on all students who complete<br />
this program. Students whose major concentr<strong>at</strong>ion<br />
is applied m<strong>at</strong>hem<strong>at</strong>ics, applied physics, astrophysics,<br />
biochemistry, biology, biopsychology, chemical<br />
physics, chemistry, cognitive and brain sciences,<br />
computer science, engineering psychology, environmental<br />
studies (as second major only), geological<br />
sciences, geology, m<strong>at</strong>hem<strong>at</strong>ics, and physics are<br />
eligible to receive a Bachelor of Science or Bachelor<br />
of Arts degree. Those majoring in psychology,<br />
psychology/clinical, and quantit<strong>at</strong>ive economics<br />
may choose to receive the degree of Bachelor of<br />
Science or Bachelor of Arts <strong>at</strong> the time they<br />
complete their degree sheet. Students in all other<br />
majors will receive a Bachelor of Arts degree.<br />
Students whose multiple majors make them eligible<br />
for either a Bachelor of Arts degree or a Bachelor of<br />
Science degree may choose between the two when<br />
completing their degree sheet.<br />
Pass-Fail Option<br />
Within the limits st<strong>at</strong>ed below, students may elect<br />
to have their grades in certain courses recorded<br />
simply as pass or fail. <strong>The</strong> purpose of this option is<br />
to encourage students to extend their academic<br />
interests. Faculty advisors will approve selection of<br />
the option if this purpose is clearly fulfilled; it is not<br />
designed as a safety valve to permit students to<br />
carry unrealistic academic loads. A student will be<br />
graded as usual throughout the course, with final<br />
grades transcribed by the registrar into pass (if D-<br />
or better) or fail. A pass does not affect the grade<br />
point average; a failing grade is averaged into the<br />
grade point average. A course th<strong>at</strong> has been taken<br />
using the pass/fail grading option and for which<br />
the student earned a pass may not be repe<strong>at</strong>ed for<br />
credit. If a class th<strong>at</strong> has been taken pass/fail is<br />
l<strong>at</strong>er needed for a requirement th<strong>at</strong> was not<br />
anticip<strong>at</strong>ed, the student may submit a petition<br />
request to his or her academic dean to have the<br />
originally assigned grade restored.<br />
In a thirty-four course credit program, students<br />
are normally required to take <strong>at</strong> least twenty-six<br />
semester course credits under standard grading; the<br />
pass-fail option may be applied to any courses in<br />
excess of twenty-six, with the exceptions st<strong>at</strong>ed<br />
elsewhere in this section.<br />
Transfer students and those students who<br />
transfer credit to <strong>Tufts</strong> from programs <strong>at</strong> other<br />
institutions must complete three-fourths of their<br />
work <strong>at</strong> <strong>Tufts</strong> under standard grading subject to the<br />
st<strong>at</strong>ed quality requirement. <strong>The</strong> pass-fail option<br />
may be applied to courses in the remaining<br />
one-fourth of the program with the exceptions<br />
st<strong>at</strong>ed below.<br />
No distinction is made between regular courses<br />
th<strong>at</strong> a student elects to take under pass-fail grading<br />
and those courses th<strong>at</strong> may only be taken pass-fail.<br />
All decisions with respect to the pass-fail option<br />
must be made within the first five weeks of any<br />
term for sophomores, juniors, and seniors, and<br />
within the first ten weeks of any term for first-year<br />
students. After five weeks (ten weeks for first-year<br />
students), the student must complete a course under<br />
the grading system then in force or withdraw from<br />
the course. For liberal arts students, only electives<br />
may be taken pass-fail; courses taken to fulfill the<br />
found<strong>at</strong>ion, distribution, concentr<strong>at</strong>ion, and minor<br />
requirements may not be taken pass-fail.<br />
Additional Gradu<strong>at</strong>ion Requirements<br />
Other courses to complete the thirty-four credits<br />
required for gradu<strong>at</strong>ion may be selected without<br />
restriction. However, students should be guided in<br />
their choice by the purpose of promoting breadth as<br />
well as depth in intellectual development. In<br />
planning their programs of study, students should<br />
keep in mind th<strong>at</strong> a good general educ<strong>at</strong>ion in the<br />
