Prize Scholarships and Academic Awards ><br />

<strong>The</strong> Associ<strong>at</strong>ion of <strong>Tufts</strong> Alumnae Seventy-fifth<br />

Anniversary Award is established to honor a woman<br />

student who has provided meritorious service to the <strong>Tufts</strong><br />

<strong>University</strong> community, adding to the university by her<br />

presence. <strong>The</strong> student should be a junior or senior with<br />

good academic standing. This award was established by<br />

the Associ<strong>at</strong>ion of <strong>Tufts</strong> Alumnae on the occasion of its<br />

seventy-fifth anniversary.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Michael E. Avtges Memorial Prize was established in<br />

1989 by Mr. and Mrs. Nicholas E. Avtges and the Boston<br />

Chapter, Society of American Military Engineers in memory<br />

of Michael E. Avtges, a student in the College of Engineering.<br />

Prizes are awarded to deserving students in the<br />

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering with<br />

preference to those who are interested in computer science<br />

and engineering.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Peter Belfer Award in Political Science is given<br />

annually for the outstanding piece of written work done in<br />

a political science course or independently by a political<br />

science major. This award was established in 1973 by<br />

Mrs. Ann Belfer Goldstein in memory of her l<strong>at</strong>e husband,<br />

Peter Belfer, A’67.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Bennett Memorial Scholarship was founded in 1924<br />

by the Class of 1914 in memory of William Joseph Bennett,<br />

scholar, soldier, <strong>at</strong>hlete, and a member of this class, who<br />

met his de<strong>at</strong>h during World War I. <strong>The</strong> scholarship is<br />

awarded to th<strong>at</strong> student who best exemplifies the qualities<br />

of true sportsmanship as exhibited by the man whose<br />

name it bears.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Charles G. Bluhdorn Prize in Economics is awarded<br />

annually to an undergradu<strong>at</strong>e majoring in economics who<br />

has demonstr<strong>at</strong>ed outstanding scholastic ability. This prize<br />

was founded in 1983 by Donald Gaston in memory of<br />

Charles G. Bluhdorn.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Anne E. Borghesani Memorial Prize is an annual<br />

incentive award th<strong>at</strong> will enable the recipient(s) to<br />

undertake a project, activity, or plan of study in any field<br />

involving intern<strong>at</strong>ional issues. <strong>The</strong> prize is designed to<br />

encourage personal growth and independence, while<br />

increasing one’s understanding of all peoples and<br />

encouraging a commitment to the world community. <strong>The</strong><br />

award honors the memory of Anne E. Borghesani, J’89, an<br />

intern<strong>at</strong>ional rel<strong>at</strong>ions major. Anne’s years <strong>at</strong> <strong>Tufts</strong> were a<br />

time of intellectual and personal challenge, adventure, and<br />

increasing commitment to her friends, the <strong>Tufts</strong> community,<br />

and the world. Anne’s love of people and her fascin<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

with travel and other cultures made her major a n<strong>at</strong>ural<br />

choice.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Boston Greek Prize, founded in 1962 with income<br />

from a fund raised by the Committee for the Promotion of<br />

Greek Studies <strong>at</strong> <strong>Tufts</strong> <strong>University</strong>, is awarded for meritorious<br />

achievement in the Greek language only when students of<br />

conspicuous merit are nomin<strong>at</strong>ed by the Department of<br />

Classics faculty.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Benjamin G. Brown Scholarships were established in<br />

1947 by the bequest of Robert C. Brown of the Class of<br />

1888 in honor of his f<strong>at</strong>her, Benjamin G. Brown, onetime<br />

Walker Professor of M<strong>at</strong>hem<strong>at</strong>ics <strong>at</strong> <strong>Tufts</strong>. <strong>The</strong>se scholarships<br />

are awarded to seniors who have shown promise in<br />

scientific research in fields other than chemistry.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Moses True Brown Prize was established in 1903 by<br />

Moses True Brown, who was <strong>Tufts</strong> College’s first professor of<br />

Or<strong>at</strong>ory (from 1866–1890). <strong>The</strong> prize is awarded, whenever<br />

a suitable candid<strong>at</strong>e appears, to a senior majoring in drama<br />

who combines high achievement in dram<strong>at</strong>ic scholarship<br />

with a strong potential for successful teaching in the field<br />

of dram<strong>at</strong>ic liter<strong>at</strong>ure, criticism, and the<strong>at</strong>re history.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Harry Poole Burden Prize in Electrical Engineering,<br />

established in 1973 by friends of Harry P. Burden, H’53,<br />

dean of the College of Engineering from 1936 to 1957, is for<br />

one or more prizes for the best design or research project<br />

done by an undergradu<strong>at</strong>e electrical engineering student<br />

or students during the academic year of the project.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Professor Kalman A. Burnim Prize for Scholarly<br />

Excellence is awarded annually to a Ph.D. student in drama<br />

who has completed all steps toward the degree except the<br />

dissert<strong>at</strong>ion and who has demonstr<strong>at</strong>ed distinction by<br />

excelling academically and in research and by contributing<br />

to the life of the program in an outstanding manner. <strong>The</strong><br />

prize was established by alumni, colleagues, and friends in<br />

honor of Kalman A. Burnim, Emeritus Fletcher Professor of<br />

Drama and Or<strong>at</strong>ory, and <strong>Tufts</strong> alumnus (A’50), who cre<strong>at</strong>ed<br />

the Ph.D. program in drama. During his 28 years <strong>at</strong> <strong>Tufts</strong>,<br />

Professor Burnim chaired the department for nine years<br />

and earned his reput<strong>at</strong>ion as a world-renowned scholar in<br />

the<strong>at</strong>re history.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Janice Spencer Calkin Community Health Award is<br />

awarded to a junior student(s) who has demonstr<strong>at</strong>ed<br />

excellence in the study of Community Health. This award<br />

was established in 2011 by Janice Spencer Calkin, J’51, an<br />

alumna of Jackson College.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Thomas Harrison Carmichael and Emily Leonard<br />

Carmichael Prize Scholarship, established in 1950 by<br />

Leonard Carmichael of the Class of 1921, seventh president<br />

of <strong>Tufts</strong> College, in memory of his parents, is awarded to<br />

assist an academically able junior or senior who has shown<br />

ability in physiological psychology or general physiology.<br />
