Prize Scholarships and Academic Awards ><br />

awarded to a student who has demonstr<strong>at</strong>ed marked<br />

<strong>at</strong>hletic vers<strong>at</strong>ility, a modest manner, successful academic<br />

achievement, and the potential for effective leadership of<br />

youth.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Department of English Prize was cre<strong>at</strong>ed by the<br />

Class of 1898 Fund and is awarded to th<strong>at</strong> student who has<br />

shown excellence in English studies.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Ivan Galantic Special Achievement in Humanities<br />

Prize, named after Ivan Galantic, Professor of Art History<br />

1971–1989, is awarded to a student who has demonstr<strong>at</strong>ed<br />

the inclin<strong>at</strong>ion and capacity to cultiv<strong>at</strong>e an integr<strong>at</strong>ive<br />

approach to learning; one who reaches for wisdom, not<br />

simply knowledge.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Constantine Ghikas Prize in Romance Languages<br />

was established in 1957 by George C. Ghikas in memory of<br />

his son, Constantine Ghikas of the Class of 1941, for<br />

excellence in a program of major study in romance<br />

languages.<br />

<strong>The</strong> John S. Gibson Award, named after the first director<br />

of the Intern<strong>at</strong>ional Rel<strong>at</strong>ions Program <strong>at</strong> <strong>Tufts</strong> <strong>University</strong>, is<br />

given to the author of the most outstanding paper written<br />

by an undergradu<strong>at</strong>e in one of the particip<strong>at</strong>ing departments<br />

in the Intern<strong>at</strong>ional Rel<strong>at</strong>ions Program.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Goddard Rhetorical Prizes, from a fund cre<strong>at</strong>ed in<br />

1862 by Thomas A. Goddard, then treasurer of <strong>Tufts</strong> College,<br />

are provided annually in the field of dram<strong>at</strong>ic interpret<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

and acting. <strong>The</strong>se undergradu<strong>at</strong>e prizes may, <strong>at</strong> the<br />

discretion of the Department of Drama, be awarded for<br />

marked excellence in acting as demonstr<strong>at</strong>ed during the<br />

student’s career in stage productions of the university<br />

the<strong>at</strong>re.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Gradu<strong>at</strong>e School of Arts and Sciences Outstanding<br />

Academic Performance Award recognizes the overall<br />

academic achievement of gradu<strong>at</strong>e students as evidenced<br />

by course grades, quality of papers, theses, and projects in<br />

the arts, humanities, n<strong>at</strong>ural sciences, and social sciences.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Gradu<strong>at</strong>e School of Arts and Sciences Outstanding<br />

Contributions to Undergradu<strong>at</strong>e Educ<strong>at</strong>ion Award<br />

recognizes excellence as a teaching assistant or other roles<br />

such as mentoring undergradu<strong>at</strong>es in the arts, humanities,<br />

n<strong>at</strong>ural sciences, and social sciences.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Gradu<strong>at</strong>e School Council Awards are given annually<br />

to outstanding gradu<strong>at</strong>e student organiz<strong>at</strong>ions and faculty<br />

mentors.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Gradu<strong>at</strong>e Student Research Awards are given<br />

semiannually to gradu<strong>at</strong>e students enrolled in either the<br />

School of Arts and Sciences or the School of Engineering.<br />

Awards are competitive and decisions are made by student<br />

peers and based on the proposal, significance of the<br />

scholarly activity and need.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Marjorie B. Greene Award is made to a gradu<strong>at</strong>e<br />

occup<strong>at</strong>ional therapy student who has demonstr<strong>at</strong>ed<br />

outstanding achievement in the areas of leadership and<br />

involvement in student and professional activities.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Greenwood Prize Scholarship, cre<strong>at</strong>ed in 1877 by<br />

Mrs. Eliza M. Greenwood of Malden, Massachusetts, is<br />

awarded for excellence in st<strong>at</strong>e production and technical<br />

arts, as demonstr<strong>at</strong>ed during the student’s career in the<br />

university the<strong>at</strong>re.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Audrey Butvay Gruss Science Award is awarded<br />

annually, with preference for a female student, to a student<br />

who has demonstr<strong>at</strong>ed outstanding academic work in any<br />

of the sciences and who is a scholarship recipient. This<br />

award was established in 1992 by Audrey Butvay Gruss, an<br />

alumna of Jackson College.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Robert P. Guertin Student Leadership Award<br />

recognizes outstanding gradu<strong>at</strong>e student leadership in the<br />

arts, humanities, n<strong>at</strong>ural sciences, and social sciences. <strong>The</strong><br />

award is given to individuals or groups of students enrolled<br />

in either the School of Arts and Sciences or the School of<br />

Engineering for accomplishments in such areas as<br />

academic or social programming, curricular initi<strong>at</strong>ives,<br />

supporting the work and lives of fellow students, community<br />

service, and developing improved policies.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Martin Guterman Award is given in memory of<br />

Martin Guterman, beloved faculty member in the<br />

Department of M<strong>at</strong>hem<strong>at</strong>ics, for the first-year student with<br />

the highest academic achievement in m<strong>at</strong>hem<strong>at</strong>ics, to<br />

encourage further study in th<strong>at</strong> field.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Audrey L. Hale Prize, established in 1995 in honor of<br />

Audrey L. Hale for forty-seven years of extraordinary service<br />

to <strong>Tufts</strong> <strong>University</strong>, including fourteen years as assistant<br />

provost, is to be awarded to an undergradu<strong>at</strong>e student in<br />

the junior or senior year who has demonstr<strong>at</strong>ed academic<br />

excellence and a commitment to intern<strong>at</strong>ional understanding<br />

through acts of compassion and humanity. <strong>The</strong><br />

recipient, who is able to achieve his/her educ<strong>at</strong>ional goals<br />

through personal and financial sacrifice, will be determined<br />

and recommended by the dean of students.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Ethel M. Hayes Scholarship, founded by the <strong>Tufts</strong><br />

Alumnae Associ<strong>at</strong>ion in 1946, in memory of Ethel M. Hayes,<br />

Class of 1896, college librarian (1896–1943), is awarded to<br />

an undergradu<strong>at</strong>e dependent to some extent on his or her<br />

own efforts to meet the cost of educ<strong>at</strong>ion and whose work<br />

throughout the preceding year has been of such excellence<br />

th<strong>at</strong> he or she is deemed worthy of high academic<br />

distinction.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Jane Anne Herman Prize is given in honor of Jane<br />

Anne Herman, J’87, who will always be remembered for her<br />

devotion to friends and family, her generosity during<br />
