Educ<strong>at</strong>ion ><br />

opportunity to explore educ<strong>at</strong>ion as a site of critical<br />

analysis through disciplines including history,<br />

sociology, anthropology, psychology, and philosophy.<br />

Students pursuing this Minor concentr<strong>at</strong>ion will<br />

develop critical understandings of school as a site<br />

of inquiry and study. <strong>The</strong>y will become broadly<br />

familiar with the bodies of scholarship th<strong>at</strong><br />

constitute the found<strong>at</strong>ions of educ<strong>at</strong>ion as a field.<br />

Students pursuing a Minor in Educ<strong>at</strong>ion with a<br />

concentr<strong>at</strong>ion in Teaching and Learning have an<br />

opportunity to explore the processes of teaching and<br />

learning both empirically and theoretically. This<br />

concentr<strong>at</strong>ion is especially well suited to students<br />

wanting to pursue possible teaching careers and<br />

those wanting to better understand these processes<br />

from different perspectives.<br />

GRADUATE ProgrAMS<br />

<strong>The</strong> department offers the following programs<br />

leading to the degrees of master of arts (M.A.),<br />

master of arts in teaching (M.A.T.), master of<br />

science (M.S.), educ<strong>at</strong>ional specialist (Ed.S.), and<br />

doctor of philosophy (Ph.D.). Degree programs<br />

may be completed on a part- or full-time basis. To<br />

accommod<strong>at</strong>e employed teachers who must conduct<br />

advanced work on a part-time basis, a considerable<br />

portion of the department’s gradu<strong>at</strong>e instruction is<br />

offered during l<strong>at</strong>e afternoon, evening, and summer<br />

sessions.<br />

Admission Requirements<br />

All applicants must provide three letters of<br />

recommend<strong>at</strong>ion. At least two of the letters should<br />

be from the applicant’s former college professors.<br />

For M.A.T. candid<strong>at</strong>es, these two letters should be<br />

from college or university professors representing<br />

the subject area in which the candid<strong>at</strong>e seeks<br />

licensure. GRE general test scores are required of<br />

all applicants except <strong>Tufts</strong> current undergradu<strong>at</strong>es<br />

and art educ<strong>at</strong>ion candid<strong>at</strong>es. Art educ<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

applicants must submit a portfolio to the School of<br />

the Museum of Fine Arts. Applicants seeking<br />

licensure as teachers of French, German, Spanish,<br />

or other languages must also submit a writing<br />

sample in the language of specializ<strong>at</strong>ion, and must<br />

also complete an interview in th<strong>at</strong> language. School<br />

psychology candid<strong>at</strong>es must have completed course<br />

work in personality or developmental psychology,<br />

abnormal psychology, and st<strong>at</strong>istics and should have<br />

experience in a human services setting or with<br />

children and adolescents in other settings. Ph.D.<br />

applicants must submit, besides a personal st<strong>at</strong>ement,<br />

a writing sample th<strong>at</strong> illustr<strong>at</strong>es the research<br />

they would like to develop toward their dissert<strong>at</strong>ion.<br />

Massachusetts Tests for Educ<strong>at</strong>or Licensure<br />

Students who plan to teach in Massachusetts must<br />

pass the Massachusetts Tests for Educ<strong>at</strong>or Licensure<br />

(MTEL) required for the area in which they wish<br />

to be licensed. Students who wish to be licensed as<br />

school psychologists in Massachusetts must pass<br />

the communic<strong>at</strong>ion and literacy portion of the<br />

MTEL. <strong>Tufts</strong> degree candid<strong>at</strong>es who took the<br />

MTEL in 2009–2010 demonstr<strong>at</strong>ed an aggreg<strong>at</strong>e<br />

pass r<strong>at</strong>e of 97% on the communic<strong>at</strong>ion literacy<br />

reading and writing tests and a 94% pass r<strong>at</strong>e in the<br />

academic content areas. Complete testing inform<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

has been submitted and valid<strong>at</strong>ed by the Title<br />

II program. During the fall semester, inform<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

sessions are scheduled to help students know wh<strong>at</strong><br />

to expect on these tests. Written m<strong>at</strong>erials and<br />

study guides are provided. Tutoring or additional<br />

prepar<strong>at</strong>ion sessions are offered as needed through<br />

consult<strong>at</strong>ion with the student’s advisor.<br />

Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) Degree<br />

Offered to students seeking teacher licensure, the<br />

department’s st<strong>at</strong>e-approved M.A.T. degree<br />

program prepares candid<strong>at</strong>es to teach in academic<br />

fields <strong>at</strong> the elementary, middle, and secondary<br />

school levels. At the completion of their program,<br />

students may apply for initial licensure in Massachusetts.<br />

Students interested in urban educ<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

may particip<strong>at</strong>e in the Fenway Pilot High School/<br />

Boston Arts Academy Program. This collabor<strong>at</strong>ive<br />

program focuses on preparing teachers to work in<br />

innov<strong>at</strong>ive urban high schools. Successful applicants<br />

work as interns in either of the two sites throughout<br />

the entire school year.<br />

Master of Arts (M.A.) in German with Teaching Licensure<br />

<strong>Tufts</strong> <strong>University</strong> offers a master of arts degree in<br />

German with initial teaching licensure. It requires<br />

two academic years plus one summer and is offered<br />

in conjunction with the Department of German,<br />
