Leadership Studies ><br />

experience (supervised by L<strong>at</strong>ino Studies<br />

faculty); or an approved equivalent community-based<br />

course in which the research undertaken<br />

focuses on L<strong>at</strong>inos (for example CH180:<br />

Community Health Internship).<br />

NOTE: Students should check the L<strong>at</strong>ino Studies<br />

website for a list of courses th<strong>at</strong> meet these<br />

requirements and/or meet with the director of the<br />

minor. All courses taken for the L<strong>at</strong>ino Studies<br />

minor program must be taken for a letter grade. A<br />

maximum of two credits from the minor may be<br />

counted toward a major or majors; up to two credits<br />

may be used for distribution requirements. Also,<br />

one language course above the intermedi<strong>at</strong>e level,<br />

Spanish for Heritage Speakers (Spanish 23), or<br />

Portuguese 1 or 2 can count as an Elective course.<br />

Leadership Studies<br />

Service<br />

Leadership Studies is an interdisciplinary field th<strong>at</strong><br />

offers students the opportunity to study leadership<br />

theory from a multi-disciplinary perspective. <strong>The</strong><br />

field of Leadership Studies complements any major<br />

<strong>at</strong> <strong>Tufts</strong>, and provides students ways to integr<strong>at</strong>e<br />

academic, personal, and experiential development.<br />

Students are encouraged to explore various<br />

leadership models while developing their own<br />

leadership style, building skills and knowledge th<strong>at</strong><br />

will benefit them while <strong>at</strong> <strong>Tufts</strong> and in their lives<br />

after gradu<strong>at</strong>ion. Scholarship in Leadership Studies<br />

analyzes the influence of historical, political,<br />

economic, psychological, and technological forces<br />

on effective leadership and leadership models.<br />

Leadership Studies <strong>at</strong> <strong>Tufts</strong> places particular<br />

emphasis on leadership th<strong>at</strong> bridges cultural divides<br />

and furthers understanding of diverse models of<br />

leadership. It is imper<strong>at</strong>ive th<strong>at</strong> leadership be<br />

understood, not only on an individual level, but<br />

also regarding the role of organiz<strong>at</strong>ions, nonprofit,<br />

for-profit, governmental, and educ<strong>at</strong>ional, in<br />

complex societies.<br />

Leadership Studies <strong>at</strong> <strong>Tufts</strong> is a rigorous<br />

intellectual program th<strong>at</strong> develops cre<strong>at</strong>ive,<br />

analytical and practical skills and <strong>at</strong>titudes: cre<strong>at</strong>ive<br />

to gener<strong>at</strong>e a vision; analytical to assess whether<br />

cre<strong>at</strong>ive ideas are good ideas; practical to execute<br />

ideas and persuade others of their value. Skill<br />

development is further encouraged through courses<br />

emphasizing public speaking, cross-disciplinary and<br />

cross-cultural communic<strong>at</strong>ion and team building,<br />

persuasion, negoti<strong>at</strong>ion, medi<strong>at</strong>ion, framing, and<br />

cre<strong>at</strong>ive problem solving. <strong>The</strong> Leadership Studies<br />

minor also requires students to analyze issues<br />

rel<strong>at</strong>ing to ethics and decision making, organiz<strong>at</strong>ional<br />

behavior, power and power rel<strong>at</strong>ions, and<br />

policymaking. In these realms, the minor also<br />

allows for a focus on civic leadership, and the<br />

importance of the development of the knowledge,<br />

skills and values crucial to effective positive change<br />

on local, domestic, and global communities.<br />

INTERDISCIPLINARY MINOR<br />

Students pursuing the interdisciplinary minor in<br />

Leadership Studies take a total of six courses <strong>at</strong> 5.5<br />

credits. Two of these must be Tier 1 core courses<br />

and two must be drawn from the list of Tier 2<br />

courses. <strong>The</strong> fifth course may be selected from Tier<br />

1 or Tier 2. <strong>The</strong> director of the Minor in Leadership<br />

Studies advises on course selection to fit each<br />

student’s interests and to establish the basis for the<br />

Tier 3 capstone senior project. No more than two<br />

of the Tier 1 and Tier 2 courses may be taken in a<br />

single department. All courses must be taken for a<br />

letter grade. As a capstone, students must complete<br />

a Tier 3 senior project. Here, students put theory<br />

into practice and take a seminar course in which<br />

they reflect on their experience in the context of<br />

their leadership courses. Students apply to the<br />

leadership program by considering how the courses<br />

they propose to take and their leadership experience<br />

constitute a coherent whole.<br />
