Prize Scholarships and Academic Awards ><br />

Thanksgiving, and her appreci<strong>at</strong>ion of the arts. This award<br />

is given by the Department of Drama and Dance for<br />

excellence in directing and/or stage management, as<br />

demonstr<strong>at</strong>ed during the student’s career in the university<br />

the<strong>at</strong>re.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Morris and Sid Heyman Prize Scholarships,<br />

established in 1980 by the bequest of Mrs. Sid L. Heyman in<br />

memory of her husband, Morris Heyman, who gradu<strong>at</strong>ed<br />

from <strong>Tufts</strong> <strong>University</strong> in 1919 with a bachelor of science<br />

degree in electrical engineering, are awarded to one or<br />

more undergradu<strong>at</strong>e students in the Department of<br />

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, based on<br />

academic achievement and future promise.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Marshall Hochhauser Prize is presented annually to<br />

seniors who exemplify the altruistic spirit of the man whose<br />

name it bears, while working within the system to broaden<br />

and enrich the intellectual clim<strong>at</strong>e <strong>at</strong> <strong>Tufts</strong> without regard<br />

for personal gain. <strong>The</strong> prize honors the memory of Marshall<br />

Hochhauser J’82P, E’79P, who, as N<strong>at</strong>ional Chairman of the<br />

Parents’ Fund <strong>at</strong> the onset of the Campaign for <strong>Tufts</strong>,<br />

labored on behalf of undergradu<strong>at</strong>e educ<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>at</strong> <strong>Tufts</strong> far<br />

beyond the call of duty. <strong>The</strong> prize may be awarded to one<br />

or two seniors. <strong>The</strong> Board of the Experimental College<br />

selects the recipients of this award.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Rob Hollister Award for Community Service and<br />

Citizenship recognizes gradu<strong>at</strong>e students who have<br />

contributed their time and effort to the community outside<br />

of <strong>Tufts</strong>. This contribution could be in the form of volunteer<br />

work, activism in community issues, or particip<strong>at</strong>ion in<br />

public service activities. <strong>The</strong> award is given to individuals or<br />

groups of students in either the School of Arts and Sciences<br />

or the School of Engineering.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Marion Ricker Houston Prize Scholarship in<br />

Economics, established in memory of a faculty wife whose<br />

friendship and gracious hospitality enriched the lives of<br />

many gener<strong>at</strong>ions of <strong>Tufts</strong> and Jackson students, is<br />

awarded to junior or senior economics majors who have<br />

been responsible citizens of the <strong>Tufts</strong> community and who,<br />

in the opinion of members of the economics department,<br />

have made substantial progress in mastery of their chosen<br />

field.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Human Factors Engineering Prize is awarded to a<br />

senior who, in the judgement of the Human Factors faculty<br />

in the Mechanical Engineering Department, has excelled in<br />

the study and applic<strong>at</strong>ion of human factors engineering.<br />

<strong>The</strong> James D. Hume Field Geology Scholarship Prize was<br />

established in 1996 by alumni, colleagues, friends, and<br />

family in memory of Jim Hume, exemplary teacher and<br />

geology department chairman, who shared his enthusiasm,<br />

knowledge, and cheerful n<strong>at</strong>ure with everyone he knew.<br />

This award is presented annually to one or more outstanding<br />

geology students to further their field experience in<br />

geology.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Albert H. Imlah European History Prize, named after<br />

Albert Imlah, Professor of History 1927–1956, Walter S.<br />

Dickson Professor of English and American History<br />

1958–1970, is awarded to a student or students for<br />

distinguished work in European history, or to promote<br />

summer reading in the honors program, or in comparable<br />

programs in history.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Albert H. Imlah Excellence in History Prize, named<br />

after Albert Imlah, Professor of History 1927–1956, Walter S.<br />

Dickson Professor of English and American History<br />

1958–1970, is awarded to a senior for excellence in history.<br />

Through this award Professor Imlah sought to encourage<br />

high academic performance.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Intern<strong>at</strong>ional Letters and Visual Studies Prize is<br />

awarded annually to a gradu<strong>at</strong>ing senior who has<br />

demonstr<strong>at</strong>ed excellence in the study of liter<strong>at</strong>ure, film and<br />

visual media in an intern<strong>at</strong>ional context.<br />

Intern<strong>at</strong>ional Rel<strong>at</strong>ions Research Scholars Program,<br />

established in 2001, supports original, high-quality<br />

undergradu<strong>at</strong>e intern<strong>at</strong>ional research. Awarded jointly to<br />

selected IR juniors who plan to undertake a senior honors<br />

thesis or other capstone research experience and their<br />

faculty mentors, the scholarship financially supports a<br />

minimum of eight weeks of summer research on an<br />

intern<strong>at</strong>ional topic. <strong>The</strong> program’s objectives are to promote<br />

intensive faculty-student mentoring and to advance the<br />

development of strong intern<strong>at</strong>ional research skills critical<br />

to professional and academic goals in an increasingly<br />

interdependent world.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Japanese Language and Liter<strong>at</strong>ure Prize is awarded<br />

annually to a gradu<strong>at</strong>ing senior who has demonstr<strong>at</strong>ed<br />

excellence in the studies of Japanese language, liter<strong>at</strong>ure,<br />

and culture.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Karno Dean’s Award for Academic Excellence and<br />

Leadership is awarded to two sophomores (from each<br />

school) who have shown gre<strong>at</strong> promise in their academics<br />

and demonstr<strong>at</strong>ed leadership on or off campus.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Ralph S. Kaye Memorial Prize was founded in 1947<br />

by members of Omicron Chapter of Phi Epsilon Pi as a<br />

memorial to Ralph Sumner Kaye, of the Class of 1937, who<br />

died while serving as a lieutenant aboard a destroyer<br />

sunk in the naval b<strong>at</strong>tle for Okinawa (Gunto) in 1945. It is<br />

awarded to a junior or senior who, <strong>at</strong> the conclusion of two<br />

years or more of m<strong>at</strong>hem<strong>at</strong>ics courses and irrespective of<br />

his/her major field of concentr<strong>at</strong>ion, demonstr<strong>at</strong>es a<br />

favorable combin<strong>at</strong>ion of proficiency in m<strong>at</strong>hem<strong>at</strong>ics and<br />

particip<strong>at</strong>ion in extracurricular activities.<br />
