REQUIREMENTS<br />
1) Applicants will usually have completed the<br />
equivalent of an undergradu<strong>at</strong>e Classics major or<br />
Ancient Art or Archaeology major with intermedi<strong>at</strong>e<br />
levels in L<strong>at</strong>in or Greek in both languages.<br />
2) <strong>The</strong> candid<strong>at</strong>e must successfully complete nine<br />
gradu<strong>at</strong>e courses (credits) as follows:<br />
a. three gradu<strong>at</strong>e courses in L<strong>at</strong>in or Greek;<br />
b. three gradu<strong>at</strong>e courses in art and archaeology<br />
(<strong>Tufts</strong> currently altern<strong>at</strong>es courses yearly<br />
between concentr<strong>at</strong>ions on Greece and Rome);<br />
c. one gradu<strong>at</strong>e course in ancient history;<br />
d. and a two-credit thesis or two additional<br />
courses.<br />
In addition both fieldwork and labor<strong>at</strong>ory work are<br />
requirements, either as documented past experience<br />
or to be fulfilled during completion of the master’s<br />
degree.<br />
3) Reading knowledge of L<strong>at</strong>in or Greek and one<br />
modern foreign language (usually German, French<br />
or Italian) is tested by examin<strong>at</strong>ion.<br />
4) To demonstr<strong>at</strong>e research and present<strong>at</strong>ion, the<br />
candid<strong>at</strong>e may submit for evalu<strong>at</strong>ion by a faculty<br />
committee either two papers (written for courses <strong>at</strong><br />
<strong>Tufts</strong> and revised as necessary after completion of<br />
the course) or a thesis. <strong>The</strong> thesis normally counts<br />
as two of the required nine courses.<br />
5) A comprehensive written examin<strong>at</strong>ion integr<strong>at</strong>ing<br />
course work with a general knowledge of<br />
classical archaeology is required, as well as an oral<br />
examin<strong>at</strong>ion based primarily on the papers or thesis.<br />
6) Residency for the equivalent of one academic<br />
year is required. <strong>The</strong> degree may be earned on a<br />
part-time basis through courses offered by the<br />
department during the regular academic year and<br />
through summer school courses. No degree is<br />
granted on the basis of summer school work only.<br />
7) Candid<strong>at</strong>es accepting assistantships (i.e. work in<br />
the department) should anticip<strong>at</strong>e a more extended<br />
time schedule; furthermore, students usually find<br />
th<strong>at</strong> writing a thesis takes a full term of uninterrupted<br />
work.<br />

A joint Ph.D. in Cognitive Sciences is offered<br />
through the departments of Child Development,<br />
Computer Science and Psychology. Prospective<br />
students apply to one of the departments particip<strong>at</strong>ing<br />
in the cognitive science Ph.D. program and<br />
indic<strong>at</strong>e in their applic<strong>at</strong>ion their intention to apply<br />
to the joint program. Once admitted to the<br />
program, students will have to complete the Ph.D.<br />
requirements of their home department as well as<br />
those of the Cognitive Science program, and their<br />
research will have to be in the intersection of a field<br />
in their home department and cognitive science.<br />
