German, Russian, and Asian lAnguages and Liter<strong>at</strong>ures ><br />

a. Language requirement: four courses beyond<br />

Chinese 4: 21, 22, 121, 122. Students placed<br />

above 21 or higher, upon completion of 122 or<br />

its equivalent, can take more advanced language<br />

courses (123, 124, 125, 126, 127, 128), or<br />

additional culture courses, or a combin<strong>at</strong>ion of<br />

both.<br />

b. Chinese 61 and four additional liter<strong>at</strong>ure and<br />

culture courses from Chinese offerings in the<br />

department.<br />

c. One course in Chinese culture or in rel<strong>at</strong>ed<br />

disciplines offered by another program or<br />

department and approved by the Chinese<br />

program director.<br />

d. One seminar course, or honors thesis, double<br />

counted as one course in C<strong>at</strong>egory B.<br />

UNDERGRADUATE MINOR ProgrAM<br />

<strong>The</strong> department offers a minor in Chinese requiring<br />

the completion of six courses beyond the intermedi<strong>at</strong>e<br />

level (Chinese 3-4). <strong>The</strong>se must include two<br />

language courses <strong>at</strong> the 100 level and two liter<strong>at</strong>ure/<br />

culture courses. Details are available from the<br />

CHINESE LANGUAGE courSES<br />

Regular classes for the first four years (1 through<br />

122) meet three times a week; regular classes <strong>at</strong> the<br />

higher levels (123 through 128) meet twice a week.<br />

Intensive classes meet six times a week.<br />

THE CHINESE HOUSE<br />

<strong>The</strong> Chinese House is a language based housing<br />

unit sponsored by the Chinese Program. <strong>The</strong><br />

mission of the Chinese House is to provide language<br />

learning experience outside of the classroom and to<br />

promote and facilit<strong>at</strong>e cross-cultural exchange and<br />

understanding within the larger community <strong>at</strong> <strong>Tufts</strong>.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Chinese House provides space and opportunity<br />

for the residents and non-residents to share their<br />

Chinese learning experience and practice their<br />

Chinese. Through academic, educ<strong>at</strong>ional and social<br />

events, students in the Chinese House reach out to<br />

the rest of the <strong>University</strong> community, enriching the<br />

life and learning experience of the larger community<br />

<strong>at</strong> <strong>Tufts</strong>. Applic<strong>at</strong>ions are available from the<br />

Chinese Program early in the spring semester.<br />

STUDY OPPortunitieS IN CHINA<br />

<strong>Tufts</strong>-in-China<br />

<strong>The</strong> <strong>Tufts</strong>-in-China program offers a fall semester<br />

in Hangzhou, China, <strong>at</strong> Zhejiang <strong>University</strong>, one of<br />

the top seven universities in China. <strong>The</strong> combin<strong>at</strong>ion<br />

of the city of Hangzhou and the renowned<br />

Zhejiang <strong>University</strong> makes <strong>Tufts</strong>-in-China a<br />

unique program for students of Chinese language<br />

and culture.<br />

Prerequisites: Well-prepared undergradu<strong>at</strong>es who<br />

have successfully completed Chinese 4 (or the<br />

equivalent) by the time of departure are eligible to<br />

apply. <strong>Tufts</strong>-in-China is open to students from all<br />

majors.<br />

German<br />

<strong>The</strong> German program promotes an understanding<br />

of the extraordinary contributions made by<br />

German-speaking writers, artists, and thinkers to<br />

the past eight hundred years of civiliz<strong>at</strong>ion, and<br />

their implic<strong>at</strong>ions for the contemporary world. A<br />

wide range of courses in German gives students<br />

with varied interests and goals the opportunity to<br />

<strong>at</strong>tain a thorough knowledge of the language,<br />

liter<strong>at</strong>ure, and general culture. <strong>The</strong> program also<br />

provides a significant number of courses in English<br />

so th<strong>at</strong> students not conversant in German may<br />

become familiar with important aspects of German<br />

culture.<br />

UNDERGRADUATE concentrATION<br />

REQUIREMENTS<br />

German Language and Liter<strong>at</strong>ure<br />

To major in this area, a student should take nine<br />

courses above the intermedi<strong>at</strong>e (German 3, 4) level.<br />

<strong>The</strong>se should be courses taught in German and,<br />

depending on the student’s prepar<strong>at</strong>ion, include<br />

German 21, and/or GER 22, 34, 44, 61, 62, and<br />

100-level courses. A minimum of two 100-level<br />

courses taught entirely in German (121 and one<br />

liter<strong>at</strong>ure/culture course <strong>at</strong> th<strong>at</strong> level) is required.<br />

Also required is one course in a rel<strong>at</strong>ed field, such as<br />

German art, film, or history. <strong>The</strong> <strong>Tufts</strong>-in-Tübingen<br />

program (see below for description) is highly<br />

recommended for language and liter<strong>at</strong>ure majors.<br />

Courses taken in German <strong>at</strong> the <strong>University</strong> of<br />

Tübingen in the areas of German language,<br />

liter<strong>at</strong>ure, and culture (e.g., film) count toward the<br />

major in language and liter<strong>at</strong>ure.<br />
